Carefully worded tweet from Venezuela's Minister of Defense. Says the Military won't accept an "imposed" President, but didn't say who the "imposed" President is. Says the Military will defend Venezuela's Constitution and sovereignty. I wouldn't rule out a military coup now.

It is quite clear he is referring to Guaidó, and that he is throwing his support on Maduro.

What remains to be seen is if the rest of the military follows him.

If Maduro falls then a lot of leftist parties in Europe will start getting nervous considering he has funneled a lot of money to them through legally questionable channels.

First good thing Trump has done. Though Hillary would've done it earlier.

Hi. The resident Venezuelan here.

This is the first time I've been genuinely happy and excited about the political situation in my country in years. Everyone is going nuts. For the first time in forever, hope seems to be around the corner.

Please just pray that everything goes well for my country.
I absolutely will!

I never pray, but the people of Venezuela and their safety will be in my thoughts.

I believe the right decision would be to put sanctions on the Venezuelan political elite while taking, and encouraging regional players to take in, refugees. It has been evident since the recent presidential election that Maduro is not the legitimate leader of Venezuela. Anything else, however, would be overstepping the right boundaries for the benefit of the region, and thus humanity, in the same vein as the Iraq and Libyan misadventures.

Merely containing the conflict to boil out, while of course providing aide and refuge to those in other countries by allowing them to settle would be wise. I believe that stopping it from spreading would also be beneficial, we should not allow any outside military activity to take advantage of this situation to subjugate and force off the people from their land.

I know a family friend stuck in Caracas, and while she won’t move due to her love of that quaint country, it is crummy knowing that she has to live through another national crisis due to the political elite not stepping down for the people to have their pick. Let that be a lesson to those skeptical of the situation on the ground, the corrupt Chavistas are really the only ones to blame for this conflict, and a hopefully speedy removal would be the best for the region. It is completely understandable that some are wary of repeating chords in Latin American history where the US overthrows leaders for worse ones. Another issue Is that as the situation evolves, all those committed to a better world should be wary of a Khomeinists, Venezuelan style. Such factions exist in the current opposition, fascistic and elitist characters in the style of current parallels such as Bolsonaro and others, yearning for more a more favorable situation for them then in the state of Venezuela before 2002. Thus let’s avoid another Iraq and yearn for a full democratic Venezuela, in which all interests are accurately represented by number in the table.

Looks like a familiar map is starting to form when it comes on who is the legitimate leader of Venezuela:

Green: Support Guaido
Red: Support Maduro

Hope India this time decides to join the US in supporting Guaido

Being neither a world power nor in the Americas, I don't think anyone cares about India's reaction.

Modi has continued to act in neutrality to the regional power-plays in the Middle East as well as with the Koreas, a continuation if you will of India’s policies in this regard with previous administrations. With Venezuela being an natural resource exporter, I can bet good money that the policy will extend over here.

Ditto for basically all center-left parties of Latin America.

Yes I know but I wanted Modi to change that policy.

Glad to see the Venezuelan people standing up against Maduro. But, he still has the support of the army, which is vital at this point. Let's hope and pray for the best.

Disappointed in Uruguay for supporting Maduro. I thought the government there was a much more reasonable, democratic left-wing government.

Reading that tweet, and especially considering the messages he is retweeting, it gives me the opposite impression, that the army is with Maduro

It's always sad to see certain "democratic" parties support a dictatorship that leaves its citizens in hunger just because they align with it on the issues. Or maybe it's the money, I know it's gotta be one of those two.

The current Venezuelian regime has nothing to do with socialism anymore, so I'd say I support the move. But I still have my doubts over the true intentions of the USA and the western world.

China had extended over $50 billion in loans over the past decade. The National Assembly had already declared that many of these debts were undertaken without its approval as required by Venezuela's Constitution, and therefore are illegitimate.

If Maduro's regime collapses soon, there will be thinking in Beijing that this was another attack by the U.S. against their interests, never mind of course that these debts were totally unpayable.

They need to evacuate the diplomats for safety reasons, but the administration wants a war.

U.S. Coups™: Overthrowing Latin American Governments since 1823

Except Maduro is no longer a democratically-elected leader, so even if it was a coup (which it is clearly not, especially with the military still backing Maduro), it would be different.

1,500 international observers would disagree with you.

Maduro is the legitimate leader of Venezuela. This coup attempt by an international, Right-wing, imperialistic alliance is inexcusable; they have no power to recognize an unelected, illegitimate leader of another country. Is Maduro corrupt? Hell yes. He’s also a frequent violator of numerous human and civil rights. No question about that. But, he’s far, far from being among the world’s worst, and yet America, Canada, etc... are perfectly fine not only tolerating, but partnering with considerably worse states, such as Saudi Arabia. The reason behind all of this is obvious: oil. Venezuela has the world’s largest proven oil reserves, yet they aren’t particularly friendly with the world’s imperialistic powers (headed by the US).

Thankfully, Venezuela’s armed forces have already expressed their alliance with Maduro’s legitimate government.

It’s funny how everyone on this forum loses their collective sh** over simply alleged Russian meddling in American elections, scream about the Fascism of Trump and Bolsonaro, then at the same time champion American-Brazilian partnership in an attempted coup.

Just what I needed, an scarlet-avatar user telling me I should be thankful that the military supports the nefarious regime that is the reason I left my country. Thrilling.
