He's the only major candidate running with no known negatives.

I'd love that to be true but let's be realistic, it's probably too early for a gay candidate and (at least in 2020) too late for a white male candidate.

To hell with that... this is a time for change. If Pete can show that he can be a bold leader for America then I don't think it will matter as much as we think in the campaign. He's smart, he's arguably qualified, and I think he can get young people excited about him. And if right now is too early for a white male gay candidate, how did Sharice Davids win KS-3 by nearly 10 this year? How did Polis win Colorado by 11? Stop making people's identities an issue and focus on their qualifications.

Buttgieg's gay? I mean, yes, it's too early in nationwide America and also too late for a white male guy.  If he wasn't gay he could be a nice primary rival to Bill Clinton in 1992 or to Al Gore in 2000.

LOL, you're not a major candidate if no one bothers to find any negatives on you.

Interesting candidate, he seems like a breath of fresh air compared to the other candidates.

Hope he does well in the primaries. Even if his campaign would prove to be an unsuccessful one, it will have some positive effects.

With him running for president, it will show  younger LGBT people that it’s OK to run for president as an openly gay person.

As a 6 year mayor who turned South Bend around, a Rhodes Scholar, an Afghan vet, a Ted Kennedy intern... he seems qualified to me. He’s got big ideas and is a very fresh addition to this primary. Rhetorically, I don’t see how he’s any different from the three term Congressman everyone’s gushing over. I think if Beto and Bernie stay out (that’s a big IF) then Pete will have a big hole to fill.

Watch him.

https://www.usatoday.com/story/opinion/2019/04/03/mayor-pete-buttigieg-christian-right-2020-democratic-primary-trump-column/3342767002

Quote
Does Buttigieg think Trump is a Christian?

“I'm reluctant to comment on another person's faith, but I would say it is hard to look at this president's actions and believe that they're the actions of somebody who believes in God,” he said. “I just don't understand how you can be as worshipful of your own self as he is and be prepared to humble yourself before God. I've never seen him humble himself before anyone. And the exaltation of yourself, especially a self that's about wealth and power, could not be more at odds with at least my understanding of the teachings of the Christian faith.”

Freedom fighter!

We should also call out the hypocrisy of the religious right.

I can't speak for RI, but personally I find this whole line of questioning a dumb waste of time.  Nobody who knows whom Pete Buttigieg is has any misconceptions about whether Trump is a sincere Christian.  You might as well ask whether the pope is Hindu.

But Trump is a true Christian because he opposes abortion and hates gays.

At least that's how millions of voters belonging to a certain demographic view things.

If one party is going to play the "I'm a Christian so vote for me, and also we need these laws because Christianity" game, then their lack of actual Christian behavior is fair game.

I couldn't care less about whether or not Trump is a sincere Christian and neither should anyone in the Democratic Party

Republicans, and/or voters who are partial to them, define themselves by what/who they hate, and that's all that matters. That's enough to get you a membership.

Seeing a gay Christian rail against Trump for this is pretty glorious though. I hope he takes the fight to the religious right in general, on top of everything.

The mayor is spot on, and the eye-rolling in this thread is silly.  Being a Christian is not about being pro-birth, or hating the LGBT community, or worshipping oneself.

It's because you don't have an argument.

You know he is right but you don't care because you see the Religious Right as your "useful idiot" rubes to vote for your policies.

But you felt compelled to react defensively in some way, which is why the eyerolls are here instead of just ghosting the thread.

Are you saying that owning the libs does not make one a True Christian?

And remember! Trump got 306 Electoral College votes. He wasn’t supposed to get 222. They said there’s no way to get 222. 230’s impossible! 270 which you need, that was laughable. Trump got 306 because people came out and voted like they’ve never seen before so that’s the way it goes. God made it happen.
