Hi there, I knew I was gay at 12, but knew I was different from other boys as early as I could remember, and I have friends who knew when they were 5. Obviously a 9 year old is way way too young to be sexually active, but kids in elementary schools give each other Valentines in lower grades and play as if they were married to the opposite sex. It’s neither disgusting nor inappropriate for a young child to have an identity that isn’t based around marrying the opposite sex.

I have no idea what you're referring to with this portion of your comment. But yes, I'm not really listening to people's subjective personal experiences here because that's just not the kind of person I am when I discuss social issues. For every anecdote you can tell me about your life, there are dozens of people who would tell me the exact opposite. And for the record, what I've read in this thread shows that people generally start to come to terms with their sexuality around puberty-- the idea that you can "tell" that a five-year-old is going to be gay is inevitably going to play into stereotypes that I don't think should be enforced, and I definitely don't want parents to waste their time analyzing their kid's behavior in order to guess which side they'll fall on.

But I don't want to sound dismissive. I know that your experiences shaped the way you approach these conversations. I just try to leave those kinds of things at the door when I talk about politics, and I generally expect others to do the same in order to keep emotion and anger out of it. The posters who irritate me the most on this site are not the ones who I disagree with, they're the bad-tempered ones who are always looking to pick a fight over a perceived slight or insult. I like hearing different perspectives, but for the life of me, I cannot abide humorless people.

I'm referring to grassroot's grotesque comments in this thread.

I'll have you know that I don't believe you're a homophobe. This notion that heterosexuality is the natural state and homosexuality is a sexual preference inside that sphere is still very deep in society. But you need to start listening to other people's experiences and realize that you truly don't know better. No, you're not leaving your emotions at the door, you're not better than other posters- your view on social issues is just as influenced by emotions (e.g. some posts regarding trans people). Even here, you're influenced by the instinct to imagine same sex interactions as sexual. Why not let that kid figure it out for himself without trying to suppress him?

Also, if you think I'm humourless you should probably ask some of my friends here.
