On paper he was the ideal candidate. He was young and charismatic. What was Rubio's downfall?

He wasn’t charismatic. That version of Rubio is an illusion.

I would say, it was the whole atmosphere of Republican primaries in 2016. Republicans wanted populist-minded and anti-establishment candidates like Trump or Cruz (who finished second in primaries).

I voted for Rubio and like him, but honestly he only lasted as long as he did because he didn't start attacking Trump until the very end.

Gang of Eight, repeated his claim about Obama instead of elaborating on it, ran against Obama (who wasn't running) instead of talking about the issues, split the "Tea Party" vote with Cruz and the "establishment" vote with Jeb and Kasich

He was basically a younger more intelligent George W Bush. People were looking for someone who was strong on immigration like Trump or Cruz. This is also a reason Rand Paul did very poorly.

^^^

Also, same thing that happened to Golden Boy Paul Ryan: Trump castrated them. If there's one good thing that Trump is doing, it's that he's humiliating and destroying so-called "rising stars" in the TrumPutin Party.

Nothing went "wrong" with Rubio....he had less gaffes and corruption with a better assembled campaign machine than Trump but ultimately none of that matters if voters don't "feel" a candidate

In 2012, this might have helped him.

His stances on the issues aren't solid. He is very wishy washy.

Yes because Trump who's changed his party registration more times than his wives was a very solid principled candidate

He was pretty much the Republican Obama, which needless to say is something they really didn't want.

Rubio was/is way less charismatic and inspiring than Obama was.

He was a candidate of other people.  People who viewed him as a guy who could appeal to a wide range of groups, and expand the map a bit due to his Cuban heritage.  The problem was that there was little POPULAR support for him at the grass roots level; those folks were for Trump and Cruz.

It's hard to be nominated for the Presidency if you're nobody's first choice and "electability" is your big selling point.

I think he could have won the nomination if he didn't bungle that debate in New Hampshire tbh.

He tried to let the media get him over the edge while putting almost no effort at the levels that matter.
