Football gets a lot of attention for concussions, but as a big soccer fan, sometimes it's freaky to see how often people can get head injuries there too. It's always a heart stopping moment when you see someone go down and stop moving, even for a few seconds.

Young people can be especially vulnerable to head injuries because their brains are still developing. They also don't have the same training as professionals to avoid those injuries. Studies have shown young girls can be especially vulnerable to untreated head injuries, but if treated, the difference mostly disappears.

It's definitely important for kids to be able to play competitive sports, but a lot of times people get carried away with winning games and take unnecessary risks, even if just trying to please their friends, coaches, and families. They don't realize the decisions in those moments could affect the rest of their life. So this bill is meant to set up some rules to protect student athletes' safety and make sure coaches and referees know how to not just teach their players how to play but also to keep them safe.

What's the difference? Tongue   (European)

Now seriously, this looks like a good bill in theory, but I am concerned that it might be too strict - for example, I am not sure it makes sense that someone with a concussion should be barred from just running or performing push-ups.

I had a feeling you might comment on that!  Tongue

Fair enough. And actually looking into it some more, it seems like some people say aerobic activity can help with recovery. So maybe as long as it isn't something where they might hit their head, it'd be fine.

Maybe the students should just be prohibited from sporting events and practice and then follow recommendations from the doctor for other activities or something like that. What do you suggest?

Quote from: Amendment
Section 2. Procedures for Responding to Concussions and Head Injuries
1. Any student who exhibits symptoms of a concussion or head injury while participating in an athletic practice or competition shall be removed from the practice or competition by either:
(a) The individual who is serving as the student's coach during that practice or competition;
(b) The individual who is serving as the student's athletic trainer during that practice or competition;

The student may take part in other forms of physical activity if given such indication by the licensed health care professional who diagnosed the concussion. The licensed health care provider evaluating the student may be a volunteer.

Section 3. Requirements to Coach or Referee Interscholastic Athletics
1. No school shall permit an individual to coach or referee interscholastic athletics unless the individual presents evidence that they have successfully completed, within the previous three five years, a training program in recognizing the symptoms of concussions and head injuries from the regional department of health or a training program authorized for interscholastic athletic competition.

This is my take, but I'm still not totally convinced and I'd like to see input from others.

Sounds reasonable to me. The amendment is friendly (and with no objections in 24 hours, it is adopted).

Anyone else?

I still think there are further improvements to be made to this bill but I would like to have my colleagues' opinions on this. It's making my head spin (hahaha no).

Why would someone be asked by a coach to do push ups if they have a concession?

Fr though the amendment is fine.
