Why would a libertarian vote for McGovern '72?

Comparing the two elections, there are parts of New England and New York where McGovern did better than FDR and Nixon did worse than Landon, but that was probably caused by demographic changes.

A Republican/Republican leaning South Dakotan who voted McGovern due to being a favourite son.
Deuel County, SD voted for Landon and McGovern.

The voter would have to be at least 54 when he or she voted for McGovern, and if still alive, at least 100 now.

McGovern certainly won a larger majority of African Americans than FDR.

A 21 year old WASP who voted for the first time in 1936 and voted for Landon only because their parents and social circle did who by 1972 had formed their own opinions and become a democrat

A northern black might well be the most likely answer here. FDR was the first Democratic candidate to win the black vote, but he didn't win it as decisively as later Democrats would and there were certainly still black Republicans in the North in the 1930s.

Exactly this. Roosevelt got 71% of the black vote in 1936, if I am not mistaken, while McGovern received 82% 36 years later. It's obvious that many older black voters who went for McGovern stuck with Landon and the Republicans in 1936, and shifted to the Democrats permanently because of civil rights, beginning with Lyndon Johnson in 1964.
