No one should have. But it's still interesting to see that Pelosi just barely hit the number that she needed. That suggests, that a significant portion of the Democratic caucus is opposed to her, and should be another signal that she should retire very soon.

So all the Dem defections were from moderates/the center left?

Yeah, basically.

No, but you can see just how good of a politician she is here. Whipping just what she needs, and releasing the rest.

He calls now all those who did not answer in the first place.

CONGRATULATIONS TO NANCY PELOSI! She'll make a great speaker.

Absolutely not.

She should have retired (just like Hillary Clinton) and let someone new, younger do the job.

Degenerated gerontocracies like the US often lead to failure and stagnation. It would be better if some new people, like Sebastian Kurz, take power to shake things up in a positive way.

Pelosi is just the same old crap and Trump will only be harder to work with.

She should assign them to restroom-duty, and give them no significant committee positions.

215 was the majority to clinch. Who was the 215th Pelosi vote to clinch the majority?

The threshold ended up being 215 (429 members voted for someone by name).

Who were the two who were not here, excluding NC-09? If I can count correctly, they are Dems.

UPDATE: #VTAL's Peter Welch (D) was the vote that clinched the Speakership for Nancy Pelosi. He was the 215th to vote for her.

She should next time. She was not my first choice either way (Adam Schiff would be a fine choice), but obviously she is a talented politican. I would have voted for her to avoid a chaos. Time to rally behind the leader, at least for now.

Not surprised to see most of the Democrats on here celebrating her return. Why do people like Pelosi so much, especially after what happened during her first tenure as Speaker?

I have Walter Jones (R-NC) as the representative absent and Pelosi did not vote for herself.

EDIT: So, it looks like Pelosi went down and voted after everyone was finished. Total votes now stand at 220.

Democrats missed a really good chance here to elect a new fresh, female leader for the next 2 years (or longer) and to present a counter-image to Trump.

Now, with Pelosi back in, the Republicans just got their "beloved enemy" back and they will use her non-stop during the 2020 campaign ...

Looks like Republican ranks today increased with 99% white men, a pirate (also a white man) and a woman:

I don't like her but I prefer her to the alternatives.

Pelosi was the only realistic alternative to complete chaos. I don't count myself among her biggest fans, but that was enough reason for me to want her elected.

You mean giving health care to millions of people and regulating Wall Street?
Yeah, how can anyone support her after doing these terrible things.
