Might I ask, if the vice president does not have to be confirmed when he/she is elected, why would a replacement also need to be confirmed? No other office which was originally elected requires confirmation for a replacement.

While this is indeed true, the implication is that we would require a special election to replace the Vice President is it not?

Unless we were to change the way a Presidential vacant is handled - early elections, which didn't have enough support last time I tried it - I would have to strongly encourage the Senate to bring back confirmation of Vice-Presidential nominees when there's a vacancy. It is very important to have some sort of oversight on who is nominated to essentially become President in case of a vacancy, and leaving it as a free appointment free of any sort of barried to be passed is to invite trouble.

We have had Vice-Presidents confirmed by the Senate whose appointment to the office turned out to be a disastrous mistake (Tyrion in 2014 is perhaps the best example), and it is vital to at least have a process to be followed through before they enter office as the next in line for the Presidency. Otherwise, it becomes incredibly easy for anyone to be parachuted into the White House by virtue of a single Presidential appointment and a resignation, and it doesn't require much imagination to see how that would be potentially disastrous.

I hope the Senate passes this amendment and I can't wait to pass it in the House!

I agree there has to be some form of oversight and at least for the time being we should bring back confirmation hearings, though I would still be favorable to independently elected Vice Presidencies with or without remaining next in line for the succession.
