He's going to be the Jeff Flake 2.0: speak out about how horrible Trump is and what a threat he is to our democracy while voting for everything that Trump wants.

Someone forgot to tell him that failed presidential nominees are supposed to go into the woods and take up knitting and bake some cookies.

I would love to see Trump eviscerate him should he make the suicidal decision to primary him.

Mitt is cementing his legacy as one of the truly great Americans of the twentieth and twenty first centuries.

I think he wants to start a political dynasty. He's probably just holding this seat for one term to warm it for Josh or Tagg.

Possibly, yes.

Mitt Romney is the most prominent Mormon politician in history to date.  He's a guy who COULD start a "dynasty".
there is a hope governor race in 2020.

Imagine having one son as Governor and the other as Senator in the same state.

As an aside, it's gonna be weird hearing "Mr. Romney" in the roll call. Like after having him be this world-famous, larger than life figure in 2012, he's now just a low-seniority, individual Senator among 99 others; one that will probably be, at most, second-tier in relevance along with people like Collins or Casey. Unless Mitch railroads him into a leadership spot, of course, and I wouldn't put that past him.

I hadn't considered this possibility, but it totally makes sense.

Mitch is waiting for Mitt to arrive in the Senate so he can pass the Majority Leader gavel over to him.
