Biden allies and others close to the vice presidential vetting process said California Rep. Karen Bass, the 66-year-old chair of the Congressional Black Caucus, has gained real traction in the late stage of the search. Amid furious last-minute lobbying and speculation about Biden's historic decision, California Sen. Kamala Harris and Susan Rice, Barack Obama's former national security adviser, are also believed to be among the most serious contenders.

Quote
Several additional women have also gone through extensive examination by the Biden team, including Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren, Florida Rep. Val Demings and Illinois Sen. Tammy Duckworth. Others, including Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms, Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham have also received various levels of scrutiny by the vetting team.

Quote
Biden's team has yet to tell any of the women they've considered in earnest for the vice presidential role that they are officially out of the running, people familiar with the process said, with one source saying 11 women are still formally being considered.

Quote
Bass' new emergence as one of the top contenders has been propelled by intensive lobbying on her behalf by some of her colleagues in the House including House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, influential California Democrats and top donors.

Quote
When Biden told reporters earlier this week that he would choose a running mate in the first week of August, two aides told CNN that the timing of an announcement was more likely to be pushed back until the week of August 10. But Biden's advisers gave him a deadline of next week to make up his mind, a person familiar with the process said.

The recent escalation of sh*t slinging is remarkable.

It should have been Sewell.

I just wish he announced Harris this weekend and end the discussion. She makes the most sense for several reasons: Has the broadest experience, is a little more progressive than Biden but doesn't alienate moderate voters, balances the ticket racially and geographically, has been on the campaign trail and the potential to succeed Biden is prez after 4 or 8 years.

I just hope it won't be Bass. She'd be a lackluster candidate and potentially too much baggage. Also hope it won't be Rice. I'd be fine with her as SoS, but for the VP slot she's too much of an unknown on the trail and may not add much other than checking the "black female" box. If it isn't Harris, one of Duckworth, Warren, Whitmer or MLG would be absolutely fine, too.

After reading that Atlantic article, Bass would be one of the worst picks ever.

I would much prefer Whitmer or Duckworth to Harris but even Harris is far better option than Bass. Bass being picked would energize the ugliest elements of the far left and do nothing but help Donald Trump.

Yeah, that doesn't sound like we're getting an announcement within the next few days.  I'd guess late next week at the earliest.  Though probably more likely is that Biden decides who the pick is by late next week, and then it's announced early in the week of the 10th.

Worse than Duckworth, Warren, Baldwin and Whitmer. Better than Harris, Rice, Demings, Raimondo and Lujan Grisham.

She might be worse than Susan Rice. I'm trying figure out might be worse. Her praise of Castro could end up costing Biden Florida. She has walked it back. Still taboo even among Democrats over there.

She didn't just praise Castro, she actually went to Cuba and worked there.
If the first thing you want from a VP is do not harm then Bass is the exact opposite of it. Why unnecessarily complicate your prospects in one of the most important states for a pick with otherwise little obvious upside?

Actually this whole veepstakes saga has become disheartening the last few days with good ol' boys like Dodd and Rendell flaunting their casual sexism and the media eating it up.

He isnt going to pick a f-ing 67 year old congresswoman who praised Fide Castro.  Get real.  The hate they have for Harris is unreal.

The way this whole process has played out is so disheartening.

VP preference aside, all of these leaks coming from the Biden campaign are ridiculous. He seriously needs to put a lid on it.

It's all misdirection.  It's been Harris all along.

They could have avoided this by not drawing out the whole process for months.
