Prologue: The Final Days of The Campaign Trail

The year is 2028, and Americans are ready to elect a new leader, especially in the face of three consecutive disastrous presidencies. However, this campaign is proving to also be unexpectedly close, and the outcome of the election is certainly not going to be decided on Election Night.

On the Republican aisle comes Senator Josh Hawley, a two term Senator from Missouri, who is campaigning to continue the fiscal and foreign policies of President Mulvaney, which critics have argued led to the economic recession of 2027 and worsened tensions with Russia. Hawley is also campaigning on a social libertarian platform, stating that “under my administration, the typical American can live their life however they want with as little government intervention as possible,” opponents argue that this will cause an increase in violence and discrimination against minorities, his ticket is notable for including the first Hispanic-American nominated on a national ticket, Florida Senator Marco Rubio.

For the Democrats, the nominee is Rebecca Sugar, creator of Cartoon Network’s Steven Universe, who is campaigning on a platform founded on predominantly what has been described by conservatives and libertarians as “Tumblr” ideals, including federally funded sex change operations, employment and Social Security benefits for LGBTQ+ individuals, mandated digital footprint checks for gun purchases, and tuition free colleges. Her opponents call these ideals “radical” and “off the charts crazy”, her ticket is notable for including the first African-American woman nominated on a national ticket, former Ohio Secretary of State, Nina Turner.

November 6, 2028:

MILWAUKEE, WI (AP) - Senator Hawley made his final campaign stop in Milwaukee this afternoon, campaigning alongside Senator Scott Walker, who is running for re-election, Vice President Priebus, and Governor Rebecca Kleefisch. Hawley spoke about how under his administration, the federal government will “help the American worker while seeing the American worker as little as possible,” referring to his social policy and applauding both Senator Walker and Governor Kleefisch for championing steel mills and auto facilities in the state.

INDIANAPOLIS, IN (NYT) - Rebecca Sugar made her final campaign stop in Indianapolis today, campaigning alongside Governor Geneva Hodgson, who is running to succeed Senator Todd Young, who is running for Governor, and Senator Pete Buttigeg. Sugar made the point of how under her administration, civil rights for non-binary individuals will increase, like mandatory employment benefits such as “safe-spaces”, the abolition of male and female bathrooms, and increased benefits for LGBTQ+ veterans.

FINAL PREDICTIONS BEFORE ELECTION DAY:

Josh Hawley (Republican): 252 Electoral Votes
Rebecca Sugar (Democrat): 241 Electoral Votes
45 Electoral Votes Undecided

Chapter 1: Election Night

Good evening, welcome to MSNBC, tonight's a night of utmost importance, the American public will elect a new president for the next four years. But the American public will most likely not know tonight, but we don’t know for sure, so without further ado, let’s kick off tonight with the states that as of 7:00 PM eastern, have just closed their polling booths.

We can immediately start with good news for the Hawley campaign, as the Show Me State Senator will carry the states of Indiana, Kentucky, and South Carolina all by convincing margins, putting him at 28 electoral votes. While Rebecca Sugar will carry the state of Vermont and its three electoral votes by a quite comfortable margin. The states of Virginia and Georgia are too close to call.

At a legislative level, the United States Senate race in Indiana is too close to call, between Governor Geneva Hodgson, and Indianapolis City Councilwoman Danielle Coulter. Governor Hodgson holds an extremely narrow lead of forty-nine votes with 3% of precincts reporting. The United States Senate race in Georgia is too early to call, with incumbent Republican Casey Cagle leading State Attorney General Jon Ossoff by a 52% - 43% margin. Meanwhile, the incumbent Republicans Rand Paul of Kentucky, and Nikki Haley of South Carolina have both been re-elected, as has incumbent Democrat Rachael Fields of Vermont.

At the gubernatorial level, the Indiana gubernatorial race will be won by Republican Todd Young, a rather early call for what was expected to be a much closer race, with Democratic candidate, Director of the State Department of Agriculture Mike Wyant behind by thirteen percentage points. We can project that Progressive Anthony Padilla has been re-elected Governor of Vermont.

It is now 7:30 PM, and a bloc of states have closed their booths, we can project very few races with pristine accuracy, but we can project that Senator Hawley will carry the state of West Virginia and its four electoral votes, with the state of Ohio being too early to call, with Hawley leading by six to seven percent with six percent of precincts in, and the state of North Carolina being too close to call.

However, we can project that Republican incumbent Rob Portman of Ohio has been re-elected, defeating his Democratic opponent Toby Fox, creator of Undertale, by a margin of 56% - 41% thus far, while the United States Senate race in North Carolina is too close to call, with incumbent Roy Cooper leading U.S. Representative Mark Johnson by a margin of 51% - 48% with about 7% of precincts reporting.

As for the gubernatorial races, we can project that Republican Evan Jenkins will succeed term limited Democrat Joe Manchin to become West Virginia’s next governor. Meanwhile, the North Carolina gubernatorial election is too close to call, with former State House Speaker Darren Jackson leading former State Attorney General Buck Newton by three percent.

It is now 8:00 PM eastern, and a slew of state have closed their ballots. The recent poll closings are good news for the Democrats, as Rebecca Sugar has ellipsed Josh Hawley in the total number of electoral votes, winning the states of Illinois, Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, and Washington DC, putting her now at 86 electoral votes, meanwhile Senator Hawley will carry the states of Tennessee, Alabama, Mississippi, Missouri, and Oklahoma, putting him at 74 electoral votes. The states of New Hampshire, Pennsylvania, Maine, and Florida are too close to call.

In the Senate, incumbents Steve Marshall, a Republican of Alabama, Susan Bysiewicz, a Democrat of Connecticut, Tammy Duckworth, a Democrat of Illinois, Chris Van Hollen, a Democrat of Maryland, and James Lankford, a Republican of Oklahoma, have all been re-elected. Close Senate races include Florida, where former Governor Ron DeSantis is leading U.S. Representative Charlie Crist by a 49% - 47% margin with 10% of precincts in, Missouri, where Governor Nicole Galloway and Attorney General Mike Kehoe are running to succeed retiring Republican Roy Blunt, with Galloway leading by a percent with 4% of precincts in, New Hampshire, where incumbent Democrat Maggie Hassan and former Governor Chris Sununu are virtually tied, and Pennsylvania, where Democratic incumbent Eugene DePasquale is running for re-election against Centre County Sheriff Bryan Sampsel, whom he leads by about 6% with seven percent of precincts reporting.

Meanwhile at the gubernatorial level, the races in Missouri and Delaware are too close to call. In Missouri, Jamilah Nasheed is leading Jay Ashcroft by about 2% with 4% of precincts reporting, and in Delaware, former U.S. Attorney David C. Weiss leads Chief Justice of the Delaware Supreme Court Leo Strine by less than a percent with seven percent of precincts reporting. In New Hampshire, Republican Russell Prescott was re-elected in a landslide.

It is now 8:30 PM eastern, and we can project that the state of Arkansas, just as the polls close, will go to Senator Hawley, adding six electoral votes to his total. We can also project that Leslie Rutledge will succeed retiring Senator John Boozman, keeping the seat in Republican hands.

Josh Hawley / Marco Rubio - 113 Electoral Votes
Rebecca Sugar / Nina Turner - 86 Electoral Votes

Republicans - 7 Seats

It is now 8:44 PM, and we can project that Senator Josh Hawley will win the state of Florida, and Rebecca Sugar will win the state of Maine except for the second congressional district, which is still too close to call, now putting Senator Hawley at 144 electoral votes, and Rebecca Sugar at 89 electoral votes. We can also project that Ron DeSantis will succeed Marco Rubio as the United States Senator from Florida, keeping the seat in Republican hands.

The time is now 9:00 PM eastern, and we can project a large influx of states, almost all of which are smaller midwestern states and Republican, the states going to the Show Me State Senator Hawley include North Dakota, South Dakota, all of Nebraska, Kansas, Louisiana, and Wyoming. However, two Democratic strongholds will continue to hold out as such by giving their votes to Rebecca Sugar, the state of New York and its 27 electoral votes, and New Mexico with its five electoral votes. The states of Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Colorado, Arizona, and Texas are too close to call.

We can also call some Senate races in which the incumbents have won, the incumbents that will be re-elected are as follows, Michael Bennet, a Democrat of Colorado, John Kennedy, a Republican of Louisiana, John Hoeven, a Republican of North Dakota, and John Thune, a Republican of South Dakota. Seats that will stay under their party are Kansas, in which Republican Mike Pompeo will succeed retiring incumbent Jerry Moran; and New York, in which Democrat Andrew Cuomo will succeed retiring incumbent Chuck Schumer. The Senate race in Arizona is too close to call, with incumbent Martha McSally leading Secretary of State Kathy Hoffman by less than two percent. While the Senate race in Wisconsin is too early to call, but incumbent Scott Walker is leading Senate President Jennifer Shilling by a 59% - 39% with three percent of precincts reporting.

There is only one gubernatorial race from the batch of states that closed their polls at this time, and that is North Dakota, in which we can project that incumbent Brent Sanford has won re-election in a landslide.

BREAKING: HAWLEY TO CARRY NEW HAMPSHIRE, NORTH CAROLINA, AND WISCONSIN
It is now 9:12 PM, and we can make three prolific calls for Senator Josh Hawley, the states of New Hampshire, North Carolina, and Wisconsin, as well as the state of Texas. But in lighter news for Rebecca Sugar, we can call the states of Minnesota, Pennsylvania and Michigan for her.

We can also call that incumbent Republican Scott Walker, a Senator from Wisconsin, has won re-election by a convincing margin.

Josh Hawley / Marco Rubio - 249 Electoral Votes
Rebecca Sugar / Nina Turner - 164 Electoral Votes

BREAKING: STATES OF NORTH CAROLINA, WISCONSIN, NEW HAMPSHIRE, AND PENNSYLVANIA, RETRACTED
It is now 9:33 PM, and we are retracting Senator Hawley’s states of New Hampshire, Wisconsin, and North Carolina, as a large amount of previously uncounted precincts have come in from Democratic strongholds. We are also retracting the state of Pennsylvania from Rebecca Sugar’s total, as a large amount of Republican precincts have come in that were previously uncounted.

However, in lighter news for Republicans, they will capture the governorship of Delaware, with 59% of precincts reporting, we can report that David C. Weiss will defeat Leo Strine by a 53 - 45% margin.

Rebecca Sugar / Nina Turner - 156 Electoral Votes
61 Electoral Votes Uncalled

Republicans - 5 Seats
Democrats - 2 Seats

Josh Hawley / Marco Rubio - 213 Electoral Votes
Rebecca Sugar / Nina Turner - 179 Electoral Votes
44 Electoral Votes Uncalled

It is now 10:00 PM eastern, and several states have closed their polling places, with that, we can make only two calls at this time, we can call the states of Utah and Montana for Senator Josh Hawley. The state of Iowa is too early to call, with Hawley leading Sugar by ten percent with 13% of precincts reporting. Nevada is too close to call.

We can project that Senator Mike Lee, a Republican of Utah, has been re-elected in a landslide, with the Senate race in Nevada being to early to call, with incumbent Democrat Catherine Cortez Masto leading former Governor Brian Sandoval by thirteen percentage points. Meanwhile, the United States Senate election in Iowa is too close to call, with incumbent Republican Mike Naig leading Democrat Rob Sand by two percent.

Meanwhile in the gubernatorial races, we can project that Utah governor Republican Spencer Cox will win re-election in a landslide, meanwhile in Montana, Democrat Angela McLean will become the state’s next governor.

It is 10:33 PM, and due to the extremely close margins in Arizona, North Carolina, and Wisconsin, the Sugar campaign has stated they will seek a court mandated recount in those states. The Hawley campaign stated that they were told of many allegations of voter fraud in Pennsylvania, and issued a court mandated recount in that state.

Josh Hawley / Marco Rubio - 229 Electoral Votes
Rebecca Sugar / Nina Turner - 166 Electoral Votes
57 Electoral Votes Uncalled

It is now 10:36 PM, and we can project that Iowa Republican Mike Naig has won re-election to the United States Senate.

The time is now 11:00 PM eastern time, and several more states have closed their balloting, and all of it is good news for Rebecca Sugar, as she will carry the Democratic block of West Coast states, California, Oregon, and Washington, quite convincingly, as well as the Democratic stronghold of Hawaii, while Senator Hawley will carry the state of Idaho.

We can also call that incumbent Democratic Senators Kamala Harris, of California, Kate Brown, of Oregon, and Brian Schatz, of Hawaii will be re-elected, as will Republican Mike Crapo, of Idaho. We can also project that the Democrats will hold their seat in the state of Washington, with Governor Cyrus Habib being elected to succeed thirty-six year incumbent Patty Murray.

However, the gubernatorial race in the state of Washington is too close to call, with Republican Dino Rossi, who lost in one of the closest elections in US history twenty-four years ago, is leading his opponent, Attorney General Bob Ferguson by five points.

The time is now 11:21 PM, and we can project Democrat Nicole Galloway the apparent winner of the United States Senate seat in the state of Missouri by about two percentage points.

Republicans - 16 Seats
Democrats - 14 Seats
3 Seats Uncalled

The time is now 11:33 PM, and we can project that the United States Senate election in Indiana will be going to a court mandated recount, but with 100% of precincts in, Indianapolis Councilwoman Danielle Coulter leads Governor Geneva Hodgson by 89 votes out of 2.8 million cast. However, we can project that Republican Senator Martha McSally, of Arizona, will be re-elected.

Republicans - 17 Seats
Democrats - 14 Seats
2 Seats Uncalled

The time is now 12:51 AM, and we can project that former Governor Chris Sununu will defeat Democratic incumbent Maggie Hassan to represent New Hampshire in the United States Senate. We can also project that Republican Dino Rossi will be the first member of his party in over 40 years to be elected Governor of Washington.

Republicans - 18 Seats
Democrats - 14 Seats

Republicans - 7 Seats
Democrats - 3 Seats

The time is now 1:00 AM, and we can project the state of Alaska, where polling booths have just closed, will go to Senator Hawley. We can also project incumbent Republican Lisa Murkowski will win re-election to the United States Senate.

However, in the state’s special gubernatorial election to fill the term of disgraced Governor Bert Stedman, Democrat Mark Begich will win the election by a quite convincing margin, thanks in part to Libertarian Joe Miller dividing the Republican vote, thus hurting incumbent Jay Ramras.

Rebecca Sugar / Nina Turner - 245 Electoral Votes
