This is how it voted in 2016

Trump: 4,664,555 (47.3%)
Clinton: 4,158,654 (42.2%)
McMuffin: 344,654 (3.5%)

Total: 9,851,797

The region as a whole is trending D. Trump performed poorly because a large percentage of Mormons voted for McMullin. Even with the total for him there, we have to consider he didn't get on the ballot in Nevada or Wyoming, states with decent Mormon populations. So if we add that to Trump's total, it goes to roughly 51-42 Trump. Obviously, the three strongly Republican states in the region (ID, UT, WY) will make that difficult given the rest aren't too strongly Democratic yet. I think a Democrat wins here if it's a good year (Obama 2012-like margin) in 2028.

Yup, CO+NM+AZ+NV are all Dem or trending Dem, and they are collectively outgrowing (in absolute terms) ID+MT+WY+UT.

Also, much of Utah's population is in a mid-sized metro area, so I could see it becoming less Republican in the future (though it will probably still be fairly Republican for its demographics).
