With the state's demographic direction and Lost Causing becoming less popular, it's practically inevitable. Thoughts?

If Mississippi does change its flag, it will likely follow Georgia's model....

from:

to this:

In other words, pick a less identifiably Confederate flag, and therefore seemingly less offensive to black voters whle still clinging to the Lost Cause.

Edit, though if they are to replace their flag, I would it to look somewhat like the official state coat of arms:

When blacks are 45% of the electorate. That will take some miscegenation.

A Confederate flag is now a fascist emblem as it is used heavily by fascist organizations (KKK groups).

If Hood is elected, he can work an agreement like Roy Barnes did with the GOP legislature to change the flag.

The Georgia legislature was Democratic when Barnes was governor; I think it only flipped in 2004.

The Georgia legislature was Democratic when Barnes was governor; I think it only flipped in 2004.

Barnes mustered enough support to change the flag in 2001 (with a Democratic House and Senate) to this abomination.

Barnes then lost in 2002 (along with the GOP taking the State Senate), and in 2003, Sonny Perdue re-neged on his promise to let the people vote on their new flag. Instead, Perdue, a GOP Senate and a Democratic House rammed through the current iteration (the Democrats would go on to lose the House in 2004).

Lots of voters remained upset with Perdue for lying; I remember all these "Punt Perdue" stickers on street signs in my area with the old flag on them because those Barnes-Perdue flag-issue voters were mad.

I think Mississippi will eventually. I'm not sure when but it will happen. My guess is sometime in the 2030s or 2040s, but it is anyone's guess.

They really should change it. There is no reason why the confederacy should be represented on the flag.

Actually, this makes sense. Blacks will likely become the majority in Mississippi in the 2040s, maybe even sooner than that. It'll happen sooner than most think, I think.

Nevermind! Seems that they are changing their flag ASAP. The legislature passed a pill and the governor (Reeves) said that he will sign it. This is very good and the confederate flag obviously should have never been their flag.

After eating my humble pie, I have to say: excuse me?

The proportion of Black people in Mississippi is currently growing at a rate of about 1 percentage point every decade. They are currently 38% of the population. What in the hell do you think will happen to make Mississippi a Black majority state within 20-something years?

They don't need to become a majority of the state to flip it though. If turnout equaled population proportion, with whites being 88% Republican (~2012 exit poll levels), and others at 3% of the vote, that would be 46.5% Democratic. Whites dropping to 85% Republican would be 48.34% Democratic and whites voting 82% Republican would be 50.11% Democratic. A coalition of composed of 98% of Blacks, 75% of Hispanics/others and 18% of whites would flip the state with a 59% White, 38% Black and 3% other electorate.

I agree with your calculation, but the post said "Blacks will become a majority in the 40s" not "Democrats will become a majority in the 40s"

Naturally, but I never let an opportunity pass to push my MS math. Tongue
