Good.

Peter King is a bigoted chickenhawk authoritarian douche who's done a nice job fooling people with his "moderate" shtick for the last few decades.  Even if the Dems don't flip this, the district will be served better not having this embarrassment as their congressman.

No no....it can't be....he's one of the "moderates" and the GOP will now nominate someone "Trumpy"

Even if he gets replaced with another Republican (which isn't at all guaranteed) it's still a sigh of relief to know that Peter King won't be in Congress anymore.

Should be the main take of this thread rather than the tired "Doesn't matter if one of the more notable so-called 'moderate' Republicans retired & is the 20th GOP retirement just this year. Won't flip so I won't care".

I suggest everyone read this excellent article (from 2011) on how King kept surviving, and how he kept being able to get away with being a mainstream conservative that's defended as a moderate. It all has to do with the legacy of Nassau corruption. Essentially, from his days with the Nassau machine, King learned when to hold, fold, and throw a bone to your opponents. He learned when to fight, when to take a stand, and when to throw someone under the bus. Via active constituent courting and "scratch-my-back" voter outreach, he became entrenched.

Since TX and FL have GOP Govs and reapportionment will be R favored, IL, CA, MI and PA should be aggressive in eliminating R districts. This and another R district will be eliminated, that's why he retired, early.

Peter King elected in bygone era of 90s in which Compuserv ruled internet and sitcoms like Fresh Prince dominated the TV airwaves. As time passed like sand in an hour glass,  we must tilt hourglass upside down and start over when granular sand has run dry and is allowed to pour freely in opposite directions. Accordingly and as such, re appropriatment as outline by Warren Earl in Reynolds CRT case is no guarantee of GOp loss outcome. We must hope and pray that electorate of long island has to senses like post nut syndrome and vote Dem

Keep on mind some states the legislature has little control over the new districts.  NY is one of them starting in 2020.   The district might expand a bit, but isn't going to be eliminated outright due to population, it will come from upstate.

I have never liked the guy, but he has always been a smart politician.  He was never a moderate, but knew how to act like one and when to take on his own party to pretend to be one (Sandy aid).  The Incumbent Protection gerrymander after 2000 which made both his seat and Israel's seat safer really helped him.  If his district after 2000 was anything like what he had in the 90's, Tom Suozzi likely would have run against him in 06 or 08 and won

I guess Mario Cuomo won this seat by 4% which is pretty remarkable given how badly he underperformed the rest of the Democratic ticket statewide. Dems definitely have a shot here if someone like Bellobe or Tim Sini jump in.

The Republican in this district to watch is young Assemblyman Mike LiPetri (R-South Shore Long Island)

He is young and appealing, even if you don't agree with his political views.

The old guard of the Nassau and NYGOP endorsed Andrew Garabino, to replace King.

You mean won by 4% while running as a relatively popular incumbent against an unknown and underfunded sacrificial lamb?

While I think this seat is potentially vulnerable, that is not an optimistic comparison.

He fits his NY-02 district very well. NY-02 is not Libertarian.

Pete King is like Massachusetts' Stephen Lynch. Blue-collar, working class, pro-labor, pro-police. The old Biden consituency in Delaware, Bob Brady's old demographic in Philadelphia.

Peter King may not have talked like a moderate Republican, but he surely did vote like one. Check out his approval ratings from the American Conservative Union, for all his years in the House, starting with 1993 to 2018, the average has been 67%.

The DCCC should be sending Steve Bellone a gift basket right now

Doesn't he live in NY-1?  Either way, they should definitely try to recruit him for one of the Long Island seats.

Steve Bellone lives in the Town of Babylon, which is in the heart of King's district.

The question is why he'd see going from County Executive of Suffolk County to a mere Representative?

I have heard that Babylon Town Councilwoman Jacquelyn Gordon is seeking this seat.  She would be the first African-American from Long Island to be elected to Congress.

Not OC but regardless - LiPetri, yes; Garbarino, that's a more uphill battle.

Why, LiPetri is too combative to win election?

Not as well-known + not as supported by the LI GOP establishment = probably more beatable.
