Statement on the End of the North Korean Conflict

I am delighted that on this New Year's Day, we can for the first time in over a year celebrate that we are no longer at war. It has been a long and difficult road to get here, a road paved mostly by the blood sweat and tears of not just our soldiers, sailors and airmen, but also that of our allies. From the beginning and certainly from the time of my Administration, my objective was to end this conflict as soon as possible, while still preserving the sovereignty, security and self-determination of the North Korean people, free from foreign interference. At the same time it was the objective to avoid a military presence on the Chinese border and the escalating tensions that such would bring. There were a number of other issues as well that had to be resolve that were indirectly related to the conflict, and those were of course important nonetheless.

I am glad that we have finally reach this point, as a people, as a nation, and as a game where this conflict is over and where most all of our desired objective have been reached. I would most certainly have preferred to have seen this result happen months ago, but we must be mindful in such things that the game has its limits and this story line, which is the longest, most fleshed out and most consistently maintained across the most Game Moderators in the HISTORY of ATLASIA, was certainly a task that pushed our Game Moderators to the limits at points. While I am on that point, we should be extraordinarily grateful to the contributions of Game Moderator AZ, Game Moderator Truman and now Game Moderator Mr. Reactionary for their extraordinary work and contributions to maintaining and finally concluding this epic story line.

It should also be noted that we had across several administrations and two Secretaries of State a level of responsiveness and engagement with a Game Moderator story that I think is without equal in Atlasian History. We would not be here at this point without the work of Secretary Mr. Reactionary and his successor Secretary Lumine. I will also note that in terms of the latter I am immensely grateful for his willingness to come forward and step up to the plate at a time when things were stalled this past fall and work diligently to see this through to its conclusion. As I said to Lumine when he first stepped forward, when I think of Atlasian Foreign Policy he is among the first that comes to my mind (and coincidentally the only one of the first three still playing the game).

I think we have seen tremendous benefits to the game from this story line, in terms of the responsiveness to the administration and generally speaking broad respect and acceptance for a story line that at times I will admit strained the patience of many. This was a conflict that very few in this game wanted, certainly not myself, then President Fhtagn and the entirety of the NSC in mid to late 2017. However, the approach taken by President Fhtagn, myself late as President and President Weatherboy here at the end, has strengthened the institution of the Game Moderator, established respect for the Game Moderator on a bipartisan basis and demonstrated a willingness to seek an end to the conflict within the confines of the story, as opposed to rejecting it or ignoring it. This has been perhaps the biggest change in Atlasia from the years prior both pre-reset and post-reset and I think it does model something of what the future is going to look more like in Atlasia where the GM is more central and an active driver of the Atlasian experience. It also remains my hope to see this level of engagement and success spread to the domestic side as well and thus incorporate the Secretary of Internal Affairs into the relationship also.

As for the story line itself, we have a number of issues to resolve in the aftermath of this conflict. The restoration of normal trade with China and large parts of Asia that have been disrupted by this conflict. I am greatly pleased to see the capture of the Kim's and their allies that were hold up in Cambodia and I hope we can build a mutually beneficial relationship going forward with Cambodia. We have made a lot of mistakes in the past in this region and most of it was merely as a side show to a poorly executed strategy to extricate ourselves from Vietnam over 40 years and doing so working in concert with our quasi-ally the People's Republic of China. For obvious reasons that situation has greatly changed and it is time for us to acknowledge our mistakes and strengthen our relationship with a country we should never have intervened in, the Kingdom of Cambodia.

I fully intend to continue to work with the administration and Secretary Lumine and while unfortunately my contributions were truncated this past month because of real life holiday work load, and I am hopeful that I will be able to assist wherever possible, including with the passage of the treaties presently before the Congress. It would be that most irresponsible of things to seize this opportunity to celebrate peace, and then forget the most important work that is necessary to secure and maintain it long term. I therefore urge continued cooperation, realism and restraint on the part of our foreign policy, to maintain our peaceful relations with the rest of the world and avoid backsliding into another period of protracted conflict.

Finally, and I realize this is getting long, but we also must not forget those who have suffered the brunt of this conflict on the front lines. I urge the administration to ensure that our agencies are serving the interest of the wounded and the veteran. That they are reviewing and conducting oversight of those medical facilities, which are receiving Atlas Care payments to treat and care for our wounded and our veterans to ensure they are getting the care they deserve. We setup this system to ensure that we were not limited and that veterans were not trapped, but at the same time, it requires oversight and administrative competence. We also need to care for those suffering from PTSD and addiction as well. Making sure the bill is covered is only step one, a necessary step that we took coincidentally, just before this conflict began. However we must go to the next step and ensure quality of care and availability of care now that access is assured. We also need to especially look into our mental health system where we lack substantially in resources, in facilities and availability of care, even once "access" (the bill is covered) has been addressed.

I look forward to these matters being address by the Secretaries in response to the Game Moderator and to working with the members of Congress and the Administration(s) to come up with solutions and reforms on the availability, quality and effectiveness side of the health/mental health care equation.

I promised that I would not seek the position of PPT again, unless we faced a desperate emergency and the alternative was the collapse of the Senate into dysfunction. A dysfunctional senate cannot possibly serve the interests of the people of the many regions, nor can it carry outs constitution functions to provide oversight over the administration, of foreign policy and serve as restrain on the popular majority in the People's House. With the loss of Sestak and the Senate already barely creeping along as it is, I think we have reached such a point of near crisis and if action is not taken soon there could irreversible damage to the people's interest. Therefore in the interest of our national security, our fiscal situation and the need to ensure that the Regions have an equal voice in the Congress, I am thus declaring for the position of Senate President Pro-Tempore.

I will be making an important announcement this Friday, March 29th. In light of the push to end the Common Market, there is a part of me that wants to make the speech from England (Part of the south under the Common Market), simply because I have never made a speech from there that I recall and I might never get the opportunity otherwise. Doing so should not be taken as statement for or against said policy change.

75 YEARS AGO!

So it occurred to me that when accounting for the time difference, at this very minute seventy-five years ago, not only had the airborne landings already taken place, but the landings had already started on the beaches as well. I remember well the 60th anniversary back in 2004 and it is hard to fathom that was already fifteen years ago, not just for myself but also it hits home that a large number of the World War II veterans that were still around back in 2004 are gone now. We have grown up, especially my generation grew up with the importance of World War II ingrained in us through movies, games, music and various other mediums.

While I doubt the conflict will fade soon from the collective consciousness, I do fear that many of the lessons learned will be forgotten and I do think that as we get more and more removed from those who fought the conflict and won it, as the degrees of separation between them and us grows, we will forget the carnage, we will forget the pain and we will forget the sacrifice the saved this world from tyranny. As that happens, we run the risk of repeating the same mistakes that led to that conflict to begin with. We run the risk of people underestimating the horror of total warfare and we run the risk of people not understanding the danger of taking things too far, even with the best of intentions.

We live and inhabit a very small and fragile planet and were we to cross over that threshold again, I doubt very much that we would be able to survive it. I encourage you to think long and hard on this day, to remember both the heroic feats that helped to liberate Western Europe, but also to remember the causes, the consequences and the high cost this conflict had and dedicate yourselves to doing everything in your power to prevent it from happening again. In failing to do so, we not only condemn ourselves but we do the greatest dishonor imaginable to those who right now, at this very moment 75 years ago, were fighting and dying to scale rock cliffs and traverse exposed beaches in the face of machine guns, land gliders on a terrain full of spikes and parachuted into flooded fields and missed drop zones.

Remember also what was occurring beyond that turmoil, behind the enemy lines. The murder, the repression, the Holocaust and every other facet of tyrannical totalitarianism, and while acknowledging the imperfections behind our own lines in our own home front, recognize that that while perfect knows this world not, there is still something that is very much good and noble and there is something that is pure, downright evil. At the end of the day we are better because while we are not perfect, we are able to improve, and though that may not always be easy, it still makes us infinitely better.

So remember the heroism, remember the sacrifice, remember the cost. Remember also why it had to happen, and then ask yourself what have you done today to prevent it happening again.
