Results of the 1st round:

AKK    450 45.05%
Merz   392 39.24%
Spahn 157 15.72%

999 votes (out of 1,001 delegates)
0 invalid votes
Should be very good news for Merz. This is getting exciting.

I agree. AKK is toast - and unemployed as of now as she has no Bundestag or Landtag mandate and as she will lose her job as general secretary.

Results of the runoff:

AKK   517  51.75%
Merz  482  48.25%

999 votes (out of 1,001 delegates)
999 valid votes

0 invalid votes
0 abstentions

Looking forward to the CDU dropping further in the polls, the Greens topping the polls, and AfD reaching 20%.

I'm looking forward to the permanent CDU lead of 25% which allows them to choose partners from everyone else at 15%.

Merz is a staunch homophobe, too. When Berlin Mayor Klaus Wowereit came out of the closet in 2001, Merz said canvassing for votes by exploiting one's homosexuality offended against the 6th article of the Basic Law, which is supposed to protect the heterosexual conception of family and marriage.

Perhaps Spahn's supporters didn't want to spend their taxes for one additional Hartz IV recipient. Tongue

2001 =/= 2015 though. I'm very forgiving and understanding as long as you support tax cuts, deregulation and curbing migrant flows.

Still a rather sh**tty comment by Merz though lol. Borderline snowflake I'd say.

Before posing the question who may become the next CDU chancellery candidate, the question who will succeed AKK as general secretary must be solved. Young Union chairman Paul Ziemiak is being discussed.
Furthermore, AKK's deputies plus the CDU presidium members are to be elected.

Do you know what moniker the German media gave AKK?

AKK will attract exactly nobody who doesn't already vote for the CDU. This also sucks for the SPD. Not as if there is much of a difference between the two parties. AfD and the Greens will continue to grow.

Worth noting that electing the more conservative Merz was far from a guarantee that it would stop the bleeding towards AfD.

Not sure how comparable it is, but after our conservatives ditched moderates for a more conservative leader, the bleeding towards the far right actually increased, not stopped!

So the CDU voted for the candidate that will ensure the policies of the person that has led the party to polling #s of around 27% will continue. I'd say the biggest winner today were the Greens and AfD. The former will be able to easily enter government in 2021 while the latter will continue to have plenty of space to exploit on the right.

Exactly! A Merz-led CDU would be a much bigger menace to the FDP than to the AfD.
The rural proletariat of East Germany would be repulsed by Merz

Now I want AKK to become chancellor, because I want the foreign news anchors to pronounce her name (ours will have to deal with Amy Klobuchar's name without giggling as a quid pro quo), plus I want to see Donald twitter her name. Tongue

Probably. But I am afraid that he would call her "Chancellor AKK" when he meets her in person also (including a Freudian slip).

It happend what I just predicted early on. Merkel has done a great job securing the election for AKK without publically endorsing her. Just hope she will never be chancellor. But unless there isn't a major change in the numbers, there is no way any federal government is formed against the CDU.

Do you happen to know if there will be polling booths, like at this year's SPD party convention where Nahles was elected? It does make a difference regarding the secrecy if you can make your choice without your neighbor looking at your ballot or not.

There will be partion walls between the places of the Delegates. The election is secret.

Exactly. I just wanted to write that. Each delegate gets a foldable table booth made of paperboard, as pictured below:

#Tischwahlkabine is trending on Twitter.
The pics and posts tweeted under that hashtag are hilarious. 😂
A political pundit even proposed it for word of the year.

How have the other parties reacted on this news? Is the SPD happy to continue as a coalition partner, or discouraged that they can’t get any bleeding from those anti-Merz moderates?

I think the SPD is at the "acceptance" stage of their grieving process.

I think the SPD-leadership is relieved, that they can continue the coalition for at least another few months. If Merz would have been elected, a snap-election would have been much more likely and I think most anti-Merz CDU-voters would have switched to the Greens instead of the SPD.

Here is the reaction of the SPD-leader:
https://twitter.com/AndreaNahlesSPD/status/1071072374659911680

Congratulations AKK. You follow in big footsteps. May you do well. Now it is time to solve problems: Securing the future of pensions, acknowledging the value of work, strengthen the coherence in Europe. I offer you good cooperation.

If 20% of Germans are willing to do that, little can be done about it. It is certainly better to know who they are, so that they can be avoided.

Finally, AKK confirmed in an interview that she thinks she's capable of seeking the chancellorship.
My condolences to all the foreign news anchors... Tears of joy
