Connally is good choice for Secretary of Defense. Funny you also have Tricky Dick as Secretary of State. Will Henry Kissinger also get a job?

Glad to see Burger becoming Chief Justice. He was pretty a pretty solid pick, although not as good as the great Earl Warren (nobody since was).

Is Nixon allowed to make public endorsements in senate primaries under the Hatch Act? I'm not sure about this.

From the Permitted Section:

There are some agencies that are prohibited from doing that but the Department of State isnt one of them

That's good to know.

Would you prefer Kemp over Buckley(He wont run in this TL but just wanna know your opinion)

Kemp, but wouldn't vote for either one unless the Democrat is a racist Dixiecrat.

For 1972, Sanford would be my choice out of this uninspiring field. Humphrey had his chance and lost.

What Goldwater should do to end the War quickly is launch an attack on Hanoi and force the North Vietnamese to Surrender. That is the only way to end before the war gets too bad like it did OTL.

Probably they wouldn't surrender. The US would have to occupy their territory for a long time and face more guerilla war.

Hope we see a good trade agreement here. Also glad to see that the Vietcong are beaten back. Maybe Goldwater can get a two state solution here similar to Korea? If so, I'd give him him credit despite opposing his domestic agenda.

For once I agree with the Gipper.

You probably also would be a fan of his Foreign Policy Team:

Sec of State Nixon
Sec of Def Connally
National Security Advisor Laird

Yes, especially Dick. That's why he is in that position in my TL as well Tongue

Sanford 1972!

If Wallace somehow gets the nomination, I'd support Goldwater. He's doing a fair job on foreign policy, though I don't like his domestic agenda much.

At this point, it would be better if Goldwater wins a second term and the Democrats start to rebuild the party and come up with a strong candidate in 1976. Someone like Frank Church or Reubin Askew.

McCarthy will get blown out. I wonder whether Goldwater cracks 60% of the popular vote.

Great to see this one resuming.

Go Jerry Brown! Did he move to Los Angeles? The Browns are actually from San Francisco.

Great to see this continue. So far, I'd support some of Goldwater's policies. Or maybe he just looks so moderate and reasonable compared to today's Republican Party.

Frank Church for president!

In this case, I'd support Goldwaters actions to end the strike, but negotations with labor should continue.

My prediction:

Reagan wins 307-231

I'm unsure about Tennessee, but it has already elected Republican senators and by the time and I think Reagan pull this one off, just as Texas.

Oh my lord, that's really close. Prediction: The winner will be a one termer because 1977-81 term is very rocky. The eventual loser might seek a rematch.

While I really wanted to have Reagan win, I decided to go in a different direction to change things up to make things a little more interesting.

I think regardless Reagan was the chance for a comeback in 1980 if Hollings messes up in the troubled late 1970s. I mean Reagan would almost be like Al Gore in 2004 with a weaker incumbent.

This is really solid work. Reading the Goldwater presidency was really good and he turned out better than expected in the beginning.

Thanks,

Although I think one of the reasons he turned out better than you probably expected was the fact that many of his policies such as the Flat Tax, Privatizing programs such as TVA etc , regulatory reform(something I favor though), and massive spending cuts failed to pass in Congress so he was forced to make compromises on those issues.

As for foreign policy, I don't think he was ever as hawkish as he was portrayed by LBJ in 1964, he just ran a terrible campaign whcih made ads like the Daisy Ad very effective.

I have a question though, say the modern GOP instead of the GOP in this TL was the one who controlled congress for the first two years of his second term do you think policies such as the flat tax would have been approved.

I honestly don't know. Did Ronald Reagan ever support a flat tax?

I like Romney, but would support Hollings here. Maybe against another Democrat, I'd be going for Romney, though.
