NBC News: Election Night 1978(Part 2)

8:00
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LQ8dPRhuE1s&t=145s

Chancellor: It is 8 PM and the polls have closed in many states and we can now project that Judge Howell Heflin will be the next Senator from Alabama, in Deleware- Senator Joe Biden will be reelected , in Rhode Island- Senator Claiborne Pell will be reelected . Now for the Republican projections,

In Illinois- We can project that Senator Charles Percy will be reelected, In Kansas- Nancy Kassebaum will be the first women to be elected senator in Kansas , In Maine- Congressman William Cohen will unseat the Democratic senator , In Mississippi- Congressman Thad Cochran will be the first Republican senator from that state since reconstruction , In New Hampshire- Senator Walter Peterson will be reelected , In New Jersey - Senator Clifford Case will be reelected, in South Dakota- Congressman Larry Pressler will easily win, and in Tennessee - Senator Howard Baker will be reelected

We are unable to make a projection in the Alabama special election which is marked as Florida here, Massachusetts, Michigan , Oklahoma

Democrats 44(-3)
Republicans 36(+3)

Savitch : In the Gubernatorial races we can now project in Alabama- Businessman Fob James will be the next Governor , in Connecticut- Governor Ella Grasso will be reelected, in Florida- State Senator Bob Graham will be the next Governor, in Maine - State Attorney General Joesph Brennan will win , in Maryland- State Senator Hughes will be the next Governor , in Rhode Island- Governor J. Joseph Garrahy will be reelected

In Illionis- Governor James Thompson will be reelected, in Michigan- Governor William Milliken will be reelected , in Oklahoma- Governor Page Belcher will be reelected, in South Dakota- state attoreny general  Bill Janklow will win, and in Tennessee - Attorney Lamar Alexander will be the next governor

We are unable to make projections in Kansas, Massachusetts , Pennsylvania, and Texas

Net Change So Far: D+1 , R+0

Brinkley: So far still no surprises in the night though Republicans taking the Mississippi Senate race is huge because it means the fact is Mississippi for 100 years was arguably the most Democratic state in the country and now the Republicans control both the Gubernatorial seat and now a senate seat in that state.

Chancellor: Well if you talk to many Democrats though, they already basically consider Senator Eastland as Republican given how often he voted with President Goldwater's agenda and against President Hollings' agenda

Brinkley: Yes that is true but the fact is James Eastland being in the Senate meant that he vote to give Robert Byrd the power to dictate the  agenda the Senate focused on rather than the Republicans and that is a big deal too. As for the Gubernatorial races  so far there is no surprise but we have to note the Deep South going back to the Democrats with the Upper South Going Republican.

8:30 PM

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LQ8dPRhuE1s&t=145s

Brinkley: The polls have closed in Arkansas and we can declare that Governor David Pryor will be the next Senator of that State but thats not all we can project as we can now project a winner in the Alabama Special Senate Race and that is that State Senator Donald Stewart will win and finish out the Late Senator James Allen's term

Democrats 46(-3)
Republicans 36(+3)

Savitch: Yup and since Arkansas has a governor election too we can project that Bill Clinton the Attorney General of the state for the past 2 years and will become the Governor of Arkansas at the very young age of 32.

Chancellor: The Democrats winning the Alabama senate race is huge because now the fact is if the Republicans lose any of the Republicans can only afford to lose one out of the remaining battleground senate races if they want to take control and that is looking very unlikely at the moment. As for Bill Clinton well with his age he had a pretty bright future ahead of him

Brinkley: While its still to early to say , this election is pretty much looking like a status quo election at least Federally.

Hollings seems like a solid favorite to win re-election right now but I have a feeling something big is coming up soon.

NBC News: Election Night 1978(Part 3)

9:00
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LQ8dPRhuE1s&t=145s

Brinkley: It's 9 PM in the east and we can now project that in Lousiana- Senator John Bennet Johnson will be reelected given that he was unopposed, in Minnesota- Senator Walter Mondale will easily be reelected and in Nebraska- Governor James Exxon will win

The races where we can project Republican winners are  Colorado -in which Senator Gordon Allot will be reelected, in New Mexico- Senator Pete Domenici will be reelected by a comfortable margin and in Wyoming- Senator Alan Simpson will be easily reelected

Democrats 49(-3)
Republicans 39(+3)

Savitch: In the Gubernatorial races NBC News can now project that in Arizona- Governor John Driggs will be easily reelected , in Colorado- Governor John Vanderhoof will be reelected, in Kansas- Governor Robert Bennett will be easily reelected , in Nebraska- Congressman Charles Thone will be reelected , in New Mexico- Governor Joe Skeen will be reelected and in Wyoming- Governor Thra Thomson will be reelected

For the Democrats we can project that Governor Hugh Carey will be reelected in New York though by a margin from around 8-10 points not anything more.

We are unable to make a projection in Minnesota, and Wisconsin

Chancellor: So the Democrats only now need to win one more seat and they will keep control of the Senate as well and right now their chances look really good with solid leads in Massachusetts, North Carolina and looks like they have the edge in Michigan

Brinkley: Yup and even though the rural counties are coming in for Jesse Helms the fact is the marign looks too much to overcome and right now I would say hes a significant underdog. In Massachusetts so far Paul Tsongas the Democrat has a solid 7-8 point lead and it looks unlike Senator Volpe can make it up and in Michigan right now Mr.Levin is trailing but much of Wayne county isnt in yet and after it is it seems that  MrLevin will take the lead.

9:39

Brinkley: NBC News is now able to make a Major Projection and that is that Democrats will retain control of the United States and Robert Byrd will remain in charge of the senate

Breaking News: Democrats Keep Control of Senate

Brinkley: The reason we can project that in Massachusetts- We can now project that Congressman Paul Tsongas will unseat Republican senator John Volpe to become the next seantor from that state and that will take the Democrats from 49 to 50 seante seats and thanks to the the fact that Vice President Muskie is the tie breaking vote, we can declare that Democrats will retain control of the United States senate

Democrats 50(-2)
Republicans 39(+2)

Chancellor: While we believed the Republicans had a good chance to take control of the senate, we always thought the Democrats would be the favorites so this isnt a surprise. I want to just talk about some races and lets start with Texas .

In Texas right now both Senator John Tower and Former National Security Advisor George Bush are performing very strongly in the Dallas, and Houston metroplexes , in the Austin and San Antonio suburbs and in rural areas out west. Both are performing pretty badly in South Texas, El Paso, Austin , and rural areas out east but the key reason, why it seems like Senator Tower has the edge while Mr.Bush seems to be in a race which is totally up for grabs, is Senator Tower has much more strength in North Texas than Mr.Bush and if Mr.Bush loses and Senator Tower wins it will be cause of North Texas.  Now at this moment if I had to choose who will win in Texas I would say both Senator Tower and Mr.Bush win it but I am over 80% sure that Senator Tower will be reelected while I a only around 55% sure that Mr.Bush will win .

In the Michigan Senate race right now Mr.Levin is up in the belweather county Macomb there which isnt good news for the Republicans and in the Ohio Gubernatorial race , former Senator Taft isnt getting the votes he needs from Cincanatii Metro or Central Ohio at the moment though it could change

NBC News: Election Night 1978(Part 4)

10:00
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LQ8dPRhuE1s&t=145s

Chancellor: Its 10 PM in the east and we can now project that in Idaho- Senator James McClure will be reelected and in Montana- Senator Tim Boback will be reelected

We are unable to make a projection in Iowa at this time

Democrats 50(-2)
Republicans 41(+2)

Savitch: In the Governor Races we can now project that in Idaho - Lieutenant Governor John Evans will be the next Governor, in Iowa- Governor Robert Ray will be reelected,  Nevada- State Attorney General Rober List will win , and in Pennslyvania - Attorney Dick Thornburgh will be the next governor of the state

Savitch: Despite Idaho being so Republican a Democrat easily won

Brinkley: Well the Lieutenant Governor in the state was very popular so this wasnt a surprise, it doenst mean that Idaho is becoming more Democratic but this is no surprise.

10:15:
With us currently is Senator Walter Mondale from Minnesota and Senator Mondale congrats on your reelection

Mondale: Thank You David , and its glad to be on

Brinkley: Senator Mondale what is your reaction to the results so far tonight

Mondale: I think they are pretty good David as while we did lose many house seats , it does seem like we will have around 240 house seats which still gives us a pretty good majority which means while there will need to have more compromises made , I feel we can still get a lot of the President's agenda passed. With us holding the seante and with senate races in North Carolina , Michigan, and given I think we will narrowly hold on to West Virginia, I think we will have 53 senate seats same as this session and have enough to pass a lot of our agenda

Brinkley : Hold on because I am told we are getting a projection in the Gubernatorial races

Savitch: Yes David and NBC News can now project that in Massachusetts-  Mr. Edward King will become the next governor of the state and we can project in Minnesota - that Congressman Al Quie will win giving the Republicans another gain in the Gubernatorial races

Net Change: R+3, D-2

Brinkley: So what is your reaction to your homestate electing a Republican governor

Mondale- While it isnt the result i wanted , I will wish Governor Al Quie well and hope he succeeds and will look forward to working with him.

Brinkley: Ok thanks for coming on

Mondale: Pleasure's mine

10:35:

Chancellor: NBC News has a major projection to make right now and that is we project that Jesse Helms one of the most conservative Republicans in the Senate will be defeated and that Former Governor Terry Sanford will be the next Senator of North Carolina. This is a huge victory for the President and the Democrats as the number 1 senator they were looking to get rid of was Jesse Helms and they succeeded.

Thats not our only projection as we can now project that in Texas- Senator John Tower will be reelected.

Democrats 51(-1)
Republicans 42(+1)

Chacenllor: That is huge news

Brinkley: Indeed it is because Jesse Helms was one of the biggest conservative firebrands in the senate and now he has been defeated and that is huge for the President as Helms was famous for throwing a flamethrower into much of his agenda and now he will no longer be senate. Some other good news for the President is that in South Carolina it seems like there is still a pretty good shot the Democratic candidate in that race could take down Strom Thurmond although Thurmond still has a narrow lead at this hour.

Chancellor: Republicans have some good news in West Virginia though as it seems that Governor Arch Moore has the lead .

Brinkley: Ok we will send it back to you local stations and be back at the top of the next hour

NBC News: Election Night 1978(Part 5)

11:00
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LQ8dPRhuE1s&t=145s

Brinkley: The polls have just closed in the West Coast and we can now project that Senator Clay Myers will be reelected in the state of Oregon and we can project that in Oklahoma - The Republican Mr. Robert Kamm will be the next senator of that state.

Democrats 51(-1)
Republicans 44(+1)

Savitch: We can also project in Oregon- That State Senator Victor Atiyeh will unseat Governor Robert Straub and become the next governor of that state. We can also finally make a projection in Ohio - where we can now project that Lieutenant Governor Dick Celeste will defeat former Republican Senator Robert Taft Jr and will be the next Governor of the state.

We can also projection in Hawaii- Governor George Ariyoshi will be reelected

We are unable to make a projection about California at this time

Net Change: R+4, D-3

Chancellor: With this being Senator Taft 2nd straight defeat , in 1976 in his reelection bid and this time in his gubernatorial bid , I think its safe to say that his career in elected politics is over. There is no way he can come back from this

As for California , while we werent able to make a projection , the exit polls favor Lieutenant Governor Goldwater Jr as he has once again put together a strong showing in Southern California and is continuing the Republican trend in rural Northern California . It  also shows that LA County is tied which again is not good news for the Democrats as their is no way the Democrats can win California without a win in LA County as it skews around 4-5 points more Democratic than the rest of the state.

11:25:

Brinkley: We have a couple more projections we can make and that is in the Michigan Senate Race - we can project that the Democrat Carl Levin will be the next Senator of the state unseating Republican Senator Robert Griffin and in West Virginia - we can project that Former Governor Arch Moore will defeat the Democratic senator Harley Staggers in a stunning upset victory which  a few months ago nobody thought was possible

Democrats 52(-1)
Republicans 45(+1)

Chancellor: Both these results are stunning as Senator Robert Griffin had been popular but Mr.Levin ran an amazing campaign with strong wins in Detriot Metro including suburban areas , NE Michigan and the very northern part of Michigan as well.

As for West Virginia, Governor Arch Moore was blamed for much of the debacle of 1976 and its stunning in two years the GOP has gone from getting less than 30% of the vote in WV to over 50% which shows you how great of a campaign he ran as well

Brinkley: We can some more projections to make for the House and they are

House of Representatives:

Democrats: 239- 242(-17 - -20)
Republicans: 193-196 (+17 - +20)

So it looks like we will have neither an ideological liberal or conservative majority in the house

11:45

Savitch: We have a major major projection to make and that is former National Security Advisor George Bush will defeat Governor John Hill by around a 2 and half point margin to become the next Governor of Texas.

Net Change: R+5, D-4

Chancellor: Texas is a state that is going more and more Republican so this is not a surprise to me . Former President Goldwater campaigned hard for Mr.Bush here and helped him get over the top as remember President Goldwater was very popular in Texas and really helped the Texas Republican Party grow in the past 10 years.

NBC News: Election Night 1978(Part 5)

12:00
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LQ8dPRhuE1s&t=145s

Brinkley: Its Midnight and we can now project that in Alaska- Senator Ted Stevens will be reelected

Democrats 52
Republicans 46

Savitch: In the Alaskan Gubernatorial race we can also make a projection that the Republican Jay Hammond will win and be the next Governor of Alaksa. We can also finally make a projection in New Hampshire - and that is that the Democrat  Businessman Hugh Gallen will unseat the Republican Governor and win that race

Net Change: R+5, D-4

Chancellor: With the exception of New Hampshire which went down to the wire I dont think the other calls were a surprise. Now lets look at some of the outstanding senate races first

South Carolina(98% in):

Senator Strom Thurmond(R) 347,349 49.92%
Former Lieutenant Governor John C West(D ) 348,001 50.01%

Chancellor: So far its anybody's race but we should probably know by around 3 AM this morning

Iowa(67% in):

Senator Richard Clark(D) 272,550 49.76%
Former Lieutenant Governor Roger Jepsen(R) 274,300 50.09%

Chancellor: That is not good news for Senator Clark as more of the Republican areas look to be outstanding than Democratic ones

Brinkley: Who would have thought at this point of the night that the Republicans would have better chance in Iowa than South Carolina

12:35:

Savitch: We have major projection to make and that is NBC News can now project California Governor Lieutenant Governor Barry Goldwater Jr , the son of former President Barry Goldwater will win and be the next Governor of the state of California

Net Change: R+5, D-4

Chancellor: And the reason we were able to make the call is that its clear at this point is due to the results in these counties: Mr.Goldwater Jr is getting over 2/3 of the vote in Orange County, 3/5 in San Diego and Ventura, 55% in San Bernadino and Ventura,  winning Sacramento and Santa Barbara Counties along with getting around 49% in Los Angeles county. So once again Republican strength in Southern California along with inroads in Rural parts of Northern California gives them the victory.

Brinkley: Now with us is Transportation Secretary and the last Democratic Governor of California Pat Brown. Secretary Brown what has happened to the Democrats in California since 1966

Brown: I think its what you alluded to , the fact is in 1966 the Republicans got hundreds of thousands of new voters in Southern California to the polls and that is given Conservative Republicans the edge ever since espically with the fact that President Goldwater energized them even more. The fact is this has happened all across the Southwest West seems to get more and more Republican and the results in Texas show that tonight

Brinkley: Why do you think that is

Brown: Well there are multiple factors, one is I think the suburban sprawl which has affected the Southwest a lot is a huge reason why, I think the growing resentment the Republicans use against the Bay Area in California is another reason why.

Brinkley: One thing though is we are also able to project Democrats will control both houses of the state legislature, most of the house seats, win all the downballot statewide races as well so whats the problem in winning the major races: Whether its for President, Senator or Governor

Brown: Well the fact is those races are actually when people usually vote more based on the issues and candidate and less on party machine and when that happens we usually win cause the fact is on the main economic issues , the country agrees with us and not the Goldwater and Reagan Republicans

Brinkley: Thank You

NBC News: Election Night 1978(Rest of Results)

1:10
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LQ8dPRhuE1s&t=145s

Chancellor: We can now project that Former Lieutenant Governor Roger Jepsen will defeat Senator Richard Clark and be the next senator from Iowa

Democrats 52(-1)
Republicans 47(+1)

Brinkley: With really only the Republican areas left in the state there is almost no way Senator Clark can win now and if things continue like this he could lose by 4-5 points tonight

1:45

Savitch : We can finally make a projection in the Wisconsin Governor race - where we can now project Mr.Stevens Point Lee Dreyfus will be the next Governor of the state

Net Change: R+6, D-5

Chancellor: This race was much closer than the polls indicated but the Republican still one . This night though has gone much better for Democrats in the Congressional races than Gubernatorial ones .

Brinkley: Yup in many ways this election night is very similar to 1970

3:15:

Brinkley: We have some major news to report to you and that is Senator Strom Thurmond will be defeated in a stunning upset victory for the Democratic candidate John C West who will now be the next Senator from South Carolina

Democrats 53
Republicans 47

Final Results:
Senator Strom Thurmond(R) 350,003 49.45%
Former Lieutenant Governor John C West(D ) 357,323 50.48%

Chancellor: And since the final margin is more than 1% that means there will be no recount and due to that we can declare that Lieutenant Governor West will win a shocking upset.

Brinkley: So the President got revenge for the results in last year special election when Senator Thurmond saved the Republican appointed candidate in that race by taking down Senator Thurmond.

All Right thanks for joining us tonight and we hope you join us for tomorrow one-hour coverage on the analysis of the election

Status Quo Election Federally although not at State Wide Races :

Brinkley: These Elections at least Federally was a status quo election with the composition of the senate changing and the House not changing much. While the Liberal Democrats may not get the sway they had this session , they still have enough seats to barely pass the President's agenda albeit with some minor compromises being made so I would say its a status quo election in the House. At the state level it was not one with 13 Gubernatorial seats changing hands

Chancellor: Even then I dont think it was that , as remember many of these seats were open seats and people so while its not status quo its not a big change either

Brinkley: I agree

President Hollings and Democrats successful in their goal of taking down Helms and Thurmond

Brinkley: The President 6 months ago made it a personal goal of his to help take down Senators Jesse Helms of North Carolina and Senator Strom Thurmond and he got his wish as both were defeated by strong Democratic opponents tonight. In North Carolina Former Governor Terry Sanford made inroads in both the suburbs and rural areas in the state which pretty much led to Senator Helms defeat while Helms wanst able to do the same in the Urban Areas. Same was true in South Carolina but to a lesser degree

Chancellor: Yup the fact is Democrats recruited Democrats who have a history of winning statewide races there and their strategy worked .  In his concession speech, Senator Strom Thurmond also announced his retirement while Senator Jesse Helms announced that he would be taking a break from politics for at least 4 years.

Gubernatorial Results further deepen East-West divide:

Chancellor: The Gubernatorial Races last night also further deepened the East-West divide in our nation with the Democrats winning all but two races in the North East and Republicans winning all but one in the West and the Republicans would have swept the entire West if the Democrats didnt run a very popular candidate in Idaho as the fact is in every other statewide race in Idaho tonight the Democrats got dominated in.

Chancellor: More striking is the Democrats actually gained a seat in the North East in the House while they lost 13 seats in the House including 3 in California .

President Hollings reacts to election results:

Source: https://delphi.tcl.sc.edu/library/digital/collections/hollings.html

Hollings: Thank You, Thank You. Last night millions of Americans all across the country went to the polls to decide the direction they wanted our nation wanted to go in and  I want to congratulate all the newly elected officials all across the country and pledge my support to work with you to make our nation a better place. As the President, I also want to send out my invitation to the newly elected Representatives and Senators to come to the White House in a couple weeks so we can discuss ways we can work with each other over the next two years.

Media Member 1: Given the fact that your part lost 18 seats in the house, how much harder will it be for you to get your agenda passed over the next two years

Hollings: Well listen, I certainly would have rather had our party gain seats but the fact is incumbent parties tend to lose seats in midterms and if you look historically I think we did fine. Even though it will be harder to pass our agenda than it was during these first two years, our party still has a majority in the House so I believe we should get our agenda passed

Media Member 2: Before the election , you had made it pretty clear that you wanted Jesse Helms and Strom Thurmond to lose more than any other senators so now that they are defeated whats your reaction

Hollings: Listen now is not the time for any gloating, it is time we bring our nation together so we can work on getting things done for the people. I do though want to congratulate my friends Terry Sanford and John West and look forward to working with them over the next few years.

Media Member 3: Do you plan to make any changes to your adminstration after tonight

Hollings: As of now now. Alright thank you

President Hollings meets newly elected Representatives and Senators at White House :

Chancellor: The President earlier today met with newly elected Representatives and Senators at the White House for lunch today and spoke to them about different ways they could work together over the next two years. Given his tenure as a Senator, he gave advice to the newly elected members on how they can be effective legislators as well.

Senate Minority Leader Howard Baker rules out Presidential Run

Source: https://www.pbs.org/newshour/politics/storied-figures-who-made-watergate-an-american-epic

Brinkley: Earlier today Senate Minority Leader Howard Baker announced that he would not be running for President in 1980 saying he believes he can better serve the nation as the Minority Leader in the Senate. He believes Republicans have a strong potential field and hopes many candidates run.

Very Early Polling of 1980 Primaries:

House Minority Leader Gerald Ford 28%
Former California Governor Ronald Reagan 25%
New York Senator Jack Kemp 21%
Former Secretary of State Richard Nixon 13%
Former Vice President James Rhodes 11%
Illinois Senator Charles Percy 1%

Chancellor: Governor Ronald Reagan has basically implied many times that he wont run if a strong conservative run so if Senator Jack Kemp runs its likely that he would be the early frontrunner if he runs .

Ted Kennedy rejects rumors of 1980 primary challenge, says he fully supports President Hollings for his reelection bid:

Chancellor: With rumors circulating that Senator Ted Kennedy was going to mount a primary challenge to President Hollings, he came out today denying those rumors . He said he fully supports President Hollings for his reelection bid as he believes the President has done a great job and for that he deserves to be reelected.

Breaking News: Shah of Iran leaves as Rebels take more and more control of nation

Brinkley: We have some breaking news to report to you and that is Mohammed Reza Pahlavi who has served as the  Shah of Iran for the past few decades has left the nation along with his family as it is looking more and more likely the nation will fall in the hands of the rebels. Secretary of State Fulbright has said that the Shah has boarded a flight to the United States and will arrive at JFK International Airport tommorow morning.

While Mr.Pahlavi does hope that the rebels do fail , at this point that looks very unlikely.

NBC Foreign Policy Correspondent: In my opinion, the only way it does fail is if the rebels themselves fall apart due to the fact that the more left-wing secular rebels are pretty much the opposite on every issue from one of the leaders of the revolution Ruhollah Khomeini who is a theocrat but have joined forces as many rebels dont believe Khomeini will be able to take power after the revolution and more secular forces will take control of the nation.

Brinkley: Always nice to have you on . The President said we hope that government forces can reestablish order in the nation but said we are also taking all the precautions needed in case things go wrong.

President Hollings's 1979 State of the Union Address :

Speaker O'Neill: Ladies and Gentlemen, members of Congress: It is my high privilege and distinguished honor to present to you the President of the United States(Standing Ovation)

President Hollings: Thank You, Thank You. Mr.Vice President, Mr.Speaker, members of congress: I want to start of by congratulating everyone here who won their election this past November and I will be looking forward to working with you for the next 2 years(Applause). Over the past two years we made lots of progress in the areas of combating poverty, expanding healthcare , educating our children but the fact is we cant get content as we have lots of work to do (Applause). It is my intention for us to expand on the progress we have made over the past two years as the fact is we can always make our nation a better place(Applause).

The most important task for any generation is to educate our children, as they are the future and will decide whether our nation will continue to reach our promise(Applause) . The most important factor in making our education system better is to make sure we can attract top talent in the profession of teaching and do that we must increase teacher pay if we want to attract such talent(Applause). Second we must work to eliminate the racial gap in our education system and the fact is we must replace our current failed policy of busing with a concrete plan which increases the number of schools we have in our communities and then we must eliminate discrimination when it comes to housing and to do say we most ban the hideous pracitice of redlining(Applause). Doing so will eliminate segregation in our communities which will in turn elimate segregation in our schools(Applause). A good education is the best way we can also reduce poverty and it will be a goal of mine for the rest of my presidency to ensure that(Applause).

Another way we can reduce poverty is by making sure every working man and women is treated fairly in the workplace(Applause). The best way to do that is by making sure we have strong unions that have and continue to represent their workers and make sure they are treated with dignity. It was unions who helped eliminate unsafe working conditions, slave wages and much more and we must not allow them to fall as they are the best representation any working person can have(Sort of Applause).

Lastly one of the most important jobs of a President is to ensure our people are safe and also help make the world a safe place too(Applause). Currently, in Iran, military leaders in both our nations are working with each other to make stability can be kept in place(Applause) and to give our support to the Iranian Government, I want to introduce to all of you the Shah of Iran, Mohammed Reza Pahlavi(Standing Ovation) and  I want to let you know Mr.Pahlavi that we will do anything we can to restore stability in your nation(Applause). Second, to keep our nation and world safe we must continue to reduce the number of nuclear weapons on this planet so we reduce the chances of the talks of a war destroying our civilization(Applause) which is why I urge the Senate to ratify the treaty our nation signed with the Soviets last year.

Thank You, May God Bless You and May God Bless America

Michigan Senator George Romney announces Presidential Run:

Romney: Thank You , Thank You. Today we are in a crucial point in our nation's history and to meetour times we need someone with the right political experience to help lead our nation in these times. I believe my experience as a business leader in the Auto industry, as Governor of Michigan, as a cabinet member and as a legislator can help solve these problems which is why I am running for President(Applause). With our economy on the brink of a double dip recession, with one of our top allies in the middle east on the verge of falling , we need a leader who will work with both parties and our allies to help fix our economy, the experience to help make the world a safer place and we need that type of leadership as soon as possible. Thank You, May God Bless You, and May God Bless America

Breaking News: Iranian Government fully fallen to rebels and Ruhollah Khomeini takes over nation. US official cuts of relations with Iran after fall of government

Brinkley: We have some breaking news to report to you and that is the Iranian Government has fully fallen to rebels and the rebels leader, Ruhollah Kohomeini, will now take over the nation as leader. He has promised to hold a referendum on a new constitution later this year and that he and his team will have the constitution drafted up in a few months. The President is currently holding a secret meeting with his national security team in what actions to take now but he has already announced that the US will be cutting off all economic and diplomatic relations with the new Iranian Government .

All Embassy and other US personal successfully get out of Iran

Chancellor: In light of the fall of the Iranian Government, the President ordered a secret mission to get all US embassy personal and other personal to successfully leave Iran . There were reports that forces inside the current government of Iran, were planning to take Americans hostage as retaliation for the US support of the Shah, so due to that the President ordered and successfully was able to get every American out of the nation before that could happen

Idaho Senator Frank Church Introduces Bill which would repeal Taft-Hartley

Chancellor: Former 1976 Presidential Candidate and Idaho Senator Frank Church introduced a bill today which effectively would repeal Taft-Hartley. Senator Church called Taft-Hartley one of the worst pieces of legislation passed into law and believes must be repealed to help stop the decline of unionization.

NBC Congressional Correspondent: That is correct but the question is can such a bill even pass a committee let alone both houses of congress and right now that looks unlikely. In my opinion there is a better chance for a bill that modifies Taft-Hartley to pass than Senator Church's bill. The President also said he would wait till the committee process fully goes through the process before deciding whether to endorse the bill or not.

Former Defense Secretary John Connally announces Presidential Bid

Connally: Thank You Thank You. With recent events in Iran, our enemies being emboldened throughout the world in general, our nation on the verge of another energy crisis it is time for a change and that is why I have decided to run for President(Applause). My experience as the governor of one of the largest energy-producing states, Texas, gives me the experience needed to lead our nation through an energy crisis and put into place policies to make sure we never face a crises similar to this again. My experience as a defense secretary in helping us end the war in Vietnam with honor, and in making sure we push back on Russian power instead of influence it will help us meet our current challenges abroad as well(Applause). The deal we have negotiated with the Soviets is a terrible deal that harms our interests and the fact is it should never have been agreed to and if I am elected I would scrap the deal and restart negotiations. The Hollings-Fulbright foreign policy has been nothing but a failure and it is time we return to the Goldwater-Nixon foreign policy which helped our nation so much during those 8 years and I will help our nation return to them(Applause). Thank You, May God Bless You and May God Bless America

Former Secretary of State Richard Nixon endorses Connally's Bid for President.

Chancellor: Former Secretary of State Richard Nixon announced he will not run for President in 1980 and instead announced he will support the bid of his good friend and former Defense Secretary John Connally instead

Repeal of Taft-Hartley fails in Committee after Democratic Senator J Bennet Johnston joins with Republicans to defeat the bill

Brinkley: With the Democrats only have a one-seat majority in the Senate Labor Committee , their efforts to repeal Taft-Hartley failed after every Republican and Democratic Senator J Bennet Johnston voted against the proposed bill to repeal Taft-Hartley. Senator Johnston said in a statement that Taft-Hartley has many good provisions in it, so any repeal bill should be a replacement bill and not a full repeal.

Democrats were planning originally to get a repeal bill out of committee so when it goes to the full floor of the senate , the final bill would still have most of the orginal bill but now if a bill goes to the full senate it likely will be watered down even further. Regardless Labor Secretary Leonard Wood announced he will be working with Senator Johnston to craft a proposal that could pass committee .

Inflation hits 4 year high with inflation rate now above 9%

Chancellor: For the first time since the Winter of 1975 the inflation rate has hit 9% and right now it looks like there is no stopping it for it to from getting even higher due to the fact that it seems like the Iranian Revolution has sparked a new energy crisis and unlike the OPEC boycott, this one will be harder to unwind from. With a new Federal Reserve chairman set to take office later this year, it seems like dealing with crises will and must be the top priority in the vetting process.

You probably would love the senate elections from 1978 as well, Hollings was able to use his popularity in the Carolinas to take down both Strom Thurmond and Jesse Helms

I like Romney, but would support Hollings here. Maybe against another Democrat, I'd be going for Romney, though.
