Anyone who uses the term ad hominem should be banned

This, also you just got placed on Calthrina's ignore list for that ad hominem attack. Welcome, come join us all!

This whole exchange should go in the humor thread. Smiley

I emptied my list before Election Day (it had some long-departed users).  Since then I've added:

The Voice of America
jimrtex
Famous Mortimer
DavidB.
2016
MillennialModerate
SirWoodbury
Trump Pwns Cucksich 2020

It's still empty.

Some people trying to make the forum into their own safe space is pretty sad.

For me it's not about safe spaces;  I have no problem with opposing viewpoints.  But when a poster demonstrates over time that they add zero or negative value to discussions, I ignore them to prevent wasting my time reading their stuff.  They're not automatically entitled to my attention.

It would be amusing if there was actually a user named Nobody (there isn't).

He's on mine too.  It was amusing for a while but got boring.

I don't understand. Are people saying he's a troll?

I'm honestly not sure what he is, but I've lost interest in trying to figure it out.

Just three people.  One is on the right, the other is on the left, and the third is...special.

Obligatory plug for "The One on the Right is On the Left", one of the funniest political folk songs of all time. Smiley

You take the internets waaaaaay too seriously if you compile an ignore list.

Just sayin'

There's a lot of people here whose week it seems is completely ruined if an opinion they don't 100% agree with dares to cross their line of sight.

Nah, it's not that; I'm pretty thick-skinned.  There are two main reasons I use the Ignore list without hesitation:

1. I have a finite amount of time and attention to expend in any given day.  When people demonstrate that their posts are consistently of too little value for me to waste my time, they go on Ignore so I don't waste it.

2. Some people are just trolling.  While I do appreciate some clever, entertaining, or amusing trollish posts, most trolls do not meet this standard.  They're just doing it for attention, and I don't wish to reward them by providing it.   Anyone who has raised small children should understand this. Wink

This policy isn't new for me or specific to this forum.  Even back in the Usenet days, I was quick to plonk people.

Back in 1997 when I was introduced to the internet by the following video, there was no mention of "Ignore Lists"

1997 Guide to Accessing the Internet

https://youtu.be/A81IwlDeV6c?t=285

Usenet had "kill files" a lot earlier than that, which would let you block specific topics, keywords, or senders.

Nobody.  My personal view is that, as a moderator, it is best for me to not use that feature.  In the past, I mostly only used it for posters with signatures that made it hard to view the forum in public (but that seems to be less of an issue now than a few years ago).

I also cleared out my ignore list when I became a mod (although I'll admit there are moments when I regret it - clearing the ignore list that is, not becoming a mod).  Since then there have been a couple times when I've accidentally put someone on ignore for a while, until I realized they were there and fixed it.
