There has been a lot of interest in a game of traditional Diplomacy, based on this thread. It takes seven players, and I agree to judge the game. The official rules (5th edition) are here and includes a lot of examples. There is a abbreviated wikibooks version, too. In 2009 smid and I judged a game on Atlas that can give you a feel of how it works.

The game I linked above was based on turns of one move per week. Orders were sent by pm to the judge by Friday midnight and the adjudicated position for the next turn was available by Sunday. That worked well so I propose that for this game, too. The judge can declare vacation breaks based on player requests, such as over the Christmas holiday. Note that the game took 6 months to play, so beware before signing up.

To test interest, I'll use the turn schedule for sign up. Requests to play should be posted in this thread by Friday Oct 5, midnight US Central Time. If seven or more requests are made by then countries will be assigned by lot and Diplomacy will begin that weekend. If there are more than seven requests, those who do not get countries are welcome to watch and kibbitz, and would have first crack at any vacancy that occurs when a player retires or goes AWOL.

May I suggest a grey press lightning format? One move per week is almost as bad as the old play by post days...

I have no interest in playing this, especially if we are going by the old 1914 based map.

I used to play this game sometimes, and it was always annoying when one was committed to working as a team with another player to advance a plan that would help both players, and then the other players fails to follow through with their part of the plan.

In addition, the old 1914 based map is very unfair, as Russia is overpowered, while Italy and Austria-Hungary are underpowered.

I would honestly suggest that you go with the 1900 map, as that map is more balanced, but I still would not want to play.

It's been a while since I've played, but I'll give it a shot.  Count me in.

I PMed muon, but I'll register my interest in the thread as well just for kicks.

Backstabbing, breaking alliances, and players failing to follow through are essential parts of the game. One of the key elements is determining who to trust. Without that it's just a pure strategic board game.

I'm not sure what you mean, since the traditional map begins in 1900, with the first move in Spring 1901.

The idea of 1 move a week is to make it as much like play-by-mail as possible.

I'm not familiar with a grey press lightning format, and Google didn't turn up anything. Is this an equivalent to face-to-face with the whole game happening in 2-4 hours?

Request to Play???

Is this the correct venue to get on the list, or do I need to PM muon2 as well?

Grey press allows for anonymous communications only and is commonly used in the major play-by-email Diplomacy servers like USDP, UKDP, USAK, etc. Lightning, I suppose, depends on your definition, but I was thinking one move every 24 hours or faster.

can we claim nations ahead of time? because if so, I'd like to reserve the United States.
(consider this a signing in)

Diplomacy is a Europe based game, and the United States is not playable in it.

I'd love to join!

In 2012 my then-girlfriend bought me the physical game for my birthday, yet in the six years since then I still have yet to find a full group to play a game Sad

I'm comfortable with one turn per week and I'll have no problem with that committment but count me out if you decide to go at a faster pace than that

If you haven't played before I recommend reviewing the links in the OP. As I indicated in the OP the assignment of Great Powers (also called countries) will be determined by lot from the list of everyone who expressed interest. If there are more than seven interested players then players who did not get countries to start will have first call on any country that becomes available if a player leaves the game.

Seven have signed up, so the game is on. The countries have been assigned randomly:

Austria - TJ in Oregon
England - Pope Michael Bolton/jdb
France - NOVA Green
Germany - Cath
Italy - YPestis25
Russia - Baconomics/Bacon King
Turkey - GeorgiaModerate

Negotiations are open by pm or whatever means are agreed to. Feel free to post questions or general statements on this thread. The first move for Spring 1901 is due by pm to muon2 by 11:59 pm Friday Oct 12.

I'm using JDip to generate maps and orders. The abbreviations on the map are acceptable for orders. Here is the starting position.

This is something I should be able to remember, but somehow cannot remember:

Can Army units move directly between North Africa and Spain?
