Soglin is a no go. He strikes me as a potential power hungry tyrant in the mold of Hugo Chavez. The homeless thing really made the hair on the back of my neck stand up.
Mitchell definitely has my vote.

I mean Soglin is horrible for a variety of reasons but comparing him to Hugo Freaking Chavez seems a stretch.
Okay I shouldnt have compared him to Chavez but what I meant is that I think he's blowing smoke and mirrors.

I don’t disagree.

He's a pretty good mayor, sort of in the Jerry Brown model (even if he did deny the liquor license to Taco Bell Tongue), but he's no really campaigning for Governor.

Everyone expect Evers, Soglin, Mitchell, and Vinehout needs to drop out so the Democrats can unite behind one candidate, otherwise they'll have a brutal primary that will help Walker get a third term.

Soglin is a disaster... everyone on this board complaining that Mahlon Mitchell is a bad candidate and not mentioning the total destruction Soglin would create is being obtuse. Mitchell is young, a firefighter,  and has been able to raise a ton of money and get a crap-load of union support. The ire for him on this board is nonsense.

Soglin is really not a disaster, he's been a fine Mayor of Madison, however he has shown the lack of drive necessary to run a campaign against Scott Walker.

Really like her, but not sure how she'd do against Walker (or as Governor).

I read that she gave a really good speech last night.

I posted something along these lines a while ago, but a NARAL apparatchik like Roys edging so far over union favorite Mitchell in the straw vote (how it relates to the actual primary, who knows) is nothing short of monumental in an institution like the Wisconsin Democratic Party.

I'm growing more and more convinced that Evers - who I don't find particularly objectionable, for what it's worth - will not be the nominee.

There is also so much energy, deservedly, behind female candidates this cycle. Not shocking that Roys could end up doing really well.

Who do you think emerges from the primary at this point in time?

I have no idea. The lack of polling this cycle across the country has been awful. Hopefully we get a Marquette Poll here soon. If I had to guess I still think that Evers has to be the favorite having been a statewide figure for such a long time. Yet I don't think you can discount Mitchell and now Roys. It seems like Vinehout has fizzled out due to her gun positions, Wachs has never gained traction, and Soglin kinda went of into la la land (he's now calling a Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reporter a Putin stooge).

Isn't Roys a loony toon who is a perennial candidate

No, not really. She's a fairly competent and well-organized resistance mommy from what I'm seeing. She's a former State Rep, and I think she ran in WI-01 D primary against Pocan in 2012.

Her issue was that she was losing in that race against Pocan in 2012 (who had all the institutional support, other than Emily's List), ran really bad negative ad that backfired and ended up losing bad (72-22!!!).

Personally I think after her performance this weekend and some of the polling rumors that we have, I'd have say that the top tier is Evers, Mitchell and Roys. They all have their positives and negatives. I think they could all beat Walker, but everyone of them could lose as well.

Can we bump this conversation off of the Wisconsin Megathread?

Why?   This immediate conversatin arises from the comment by Matt Flyn, a candidate for Governor of Wisconsin and a former Chairman of the Wisconsin Democrat Party that the Party was being “pickled in identity politics.”

People complaining about identity politics is the lamest sh!t ever. All politics is identity politics. It's always been that way. The Southern Strategy was Republicans playing identity politics.

Trump won on White Identity politics.

The first two things are really good the second two things are... the kind of "sounds good, doesn't work" things that politicians propose all the time (think: no budget no pay).

I was born in 1988, Wisconsin has only had a total of 4 Governors since I've been alive: Thompson, McCallum, Doyle and Walker. The state really needs some form of statewide term limits.

Walker doesn’t rely on Obama-Trump types to win anyhow. Not the best news for him, but not the worst.

Yes he does, he would have lost in 2014 and 2012 if the Democrat had gotten Obama's 2012 margin in the Southwest and Northeast.

Hooboy. I didn't think they'd start admitting they aren't keeping their side of the deal so soon. Hopefully this gets coverage,  because Foxconn has voters of all stripes riled up.

Also, I'm a bit bummed Wachs dropped out,  but hopefully his supporters will go for Vinehout. We need someone who is progressive but not a Madison/Milwaukee native. Outstate dems already feel abandoned and unimportant. If someone like Evers (or, God forbid, Soglin) gets the nod, some of those outstate dems and anti-Walker independents will stay home.

Evers has lived all over Wisconsin. He was born in Plymouth, studied in Madison, and worked in Tomah, Oakfield, Verona and Oshkosh before moving to Madison to become Deputy Superintendent.
