Kelda Roys wins the Wispolitcs Democratic Party Convention Straw Poll

Results:

Ballots cast: 800

– Governor

Total votes: 789

Kelda Roys: 184
Mahlon Mitchell: 93
Tony Evers: 91
Andy Gronik: 89
Dana Wachs: 89
Kathleen Vinehout: 83
Mike McCabe: 81
Matt Flynn: 71
Josh Pade: 7
Paul Soglin: 1 (lol)

— Lieutenant Governor

Total votes: 763

Mandela Barnes: 617
Kurt Kober: 146

— Secretary of State

Total votes: 728

Doug La Follette: 385
Arvina Marie Martin: 343

— State Treasurer

Total votes: 704

Sarah Godlewski: 530
Cynthia Kaump: 109
Dawn Marie Sass: 65

Why did an incumbent like Doug La Follette have such a close vote?

Because he's an elite that doesn't campaign for the job and doesn't think he should have to engage in a primary for the job.

Well, he's been kind of invincible for the past 10 terms. Granted, he hasn't been winning in landslides, but the GOP failed to take him out in even 2010 and 2014. He probably doesn't think much of the primary challenge.

Not only that, but I doubt the primary is that close in actuality. These votes seem to be skewed to younger, more exciting candidates that appeal more to activists. For example, Roys won the convention straw poll handily, and the third-place Evers still holds a solid lead over the rest of the field in actual polling, and will most likely win the primary. I think the same holds true for LaFollette.

Also, his name is LaFollette, so he has that going for him.

Teachers make more than state legislators in Wisconsin...ironically if he ties them together then the state legislators are getting a pay raise and not the teachers lol

Otherwise it seems good

The first two things are really good the second two things are... the kind of "sounds good, doesn't work" things that politicians propose all the time (think: no budget no pay).

I was surprised Evers was a supporter of term limits then I learned he hasn't been in politics that long despite his age.

I was born in 1988, Wisconsin has only had a total of 4 Governors since I've been alive: Thompson, McCallum, Doyle and Walker. The state really needs some form of statewide term limits.

I know I'm late to the party here but the last two points are bad. Term limits are a silly, unnecessary  populist (and anti-intellectual) idea and reducing legislator salaries is a good way to ensure that only people who are already wealthy can run for office. Super disappointed that Evers would support either of these ideas.

I think the term limits are for statewide offices, which is fine. There’s no reason not to have term limits for things like governorships, and 12 years would be more generous than most states.

Also, in Wisconsin, teachers get paid more than state legislators do.

Two Madison Assembly members are calling on Matt Flynn to drop out of the gubernatorial race, citing his previous work on behalf of the Archdiocese of Milwaukee against survivors of sexual assault from clergy.

Hard to see Flynn as anything but DOA against Walker.

Walker doesn’t rely on Obama-Trump types to win anyhow. Not the best news for him, but not the worst.

Yes he does, he would have lost in 2014 and 2012 if the Democrat had gotten Obama's 2012 margin in the Southwest and Northeast.

Most of Scott Walker's support comes from the Milwaukee suburbs, yes, but he was able to narrowly win via low turnout from Dane and Milwaukee and the anti-Obama feelings among WWC in the southwest specifically.
