In 2012, Romney narrowly defeats Obama but loses the popular vote.

Trump enters the 2016 race as a Democrat and wins the nomination.

With Romney having an approval rating of 47% on Election Day, who would win this matchup

It would be funny if Trump talked about the Koch Brothers and the NRA the way he talks about immigrants.

President Mitt Romney (R-MA) / Vice President Paul Ryan (R-WI)
Businessman Donald Trump (D-NY) / Congressman Tim Ryan (D-OH) ✓

Trump is essentially a charismatic Biden.

I don't have a map, but it would be a Trump win. Romney lost in 2012 because Obama went all populist on him. Trump would presumably do so even more intensely.

Donald Trump: 271 electoral votes
President Romney: 267 electoral votes

Map resembles 2000 but with Ohio going Democratic.

FL, OH, PA and IA are the closest states.

In 2012, Romney narrowly defeats Obama but loses the popular vote.

The 2012 tipping point (CO) was to the left of the national popular vote.  Romney would have won the popular vote before the EC in 2012.

Trump/Ryan - 292
Romney/Ryan - 246

Trump wouldn't win the nomination of the Democratic Party.

If he did...

President Mitt Romney/ Vice President Paul Ryan (R) 50% 317 EV
Businessman Donald Trump/Representative Tulsi Gabbard (D) 46% 221 EV

Why would Trump make Tulsi his running mate? He wouldn’t pick someone that progressive

Tulsi is a Democrat who is a Progressive Dove on Foreign Policy and a Moderate (at best) on Domestic Policy, if her past as a legislator in Hawaii is any indication.

Her record in the house is what’s important and in the house she has supported decriminalization of prostitution, legalization of marijuana and the green new deal among others. Trump would not be okay with these policy positions.

We are assuming a Trump who is a Democrat wouldn't take these positions. The guy is literally a political weather vane.

I despised Donald Trump even when he was a liberal Democrat and also don’t consider myself to be a populist (I am more of a center-left Democrat in the mold of Barack Obama), so Mitt Romney would easily have my vote in this match-up.
