Of course, Flake and Blunt might just “look at it closely” and approve him anyway.

This is exactly what they’re doing.

There's a very good chance they'll still vote for him, but they are lining up behind the idea that we have to hear Ford testify, and if she does, I don't see how Kavanaugh avoids testifying under oath at which point he either risks perjuring himself or changing his story.

I don't think it right to tar and feather someone for something that they did of this genre when age 17, decades later. The problem is a matter of Kavanaugh's candor now however. And the rule of evidence here should be more likely than not, not beyond a reasonable doubt. It seems that if this nomination moves forward (because K claims it is all a tissue of lies), then it looks like we will have full fledged hearings on this under oath (because the accuser's lawyer says that she is ready and willing to do that). I think that is essential at this point. Anita Hill all over again. It should be great for TV ratings. I suspect the odds are more than insignificant that the nomination will be withdrawn. We shall see.
If his nomination is rescinded, the GOP will get crucified at the polls by the base.

Nope. Trump just picks somebody else from his list (presumably someone less scandalous and not so overtly pro-presidential power) and gets them confirmed. McConnell has already been clear that the Senate will remain in session through all of October, even if the House gets a long break - The agenda was going to be 10 pending Circuit Court noms, but that can easily be modified.

Yes, I don't see why Republicans don't cut their losses quickly and get someone else off the list up there. Barrett risks dragging things out past the elections and then it's game over for Republicans, but perhaps they're willing to take that risk.

A delay can only be a good thing for Republicans as those rabid GOP Supreme Court voters will flood the polls this November in order to ensure the seat will be filled conservatively. Think about it, if anyone gets confirmed before the elections, the motivation to vote will evaporate.

Seems strange that the senators don't seem to be following that logic, doesn't it?

Grassley, McConnell want this to move ASAP. It's the heretics like Flake and Collins who suggested delay.

Plus, to be honest, I think Republicans will hold the Senate. But who knows.

70% + chance republicans keep control so risk isn't that great . Plus Dems don't have stones to pull a Merrick Garland for 2 years.

Garland being held hostage was nothing but a Pavlov Bell for the conservatives in 2016. Any extended SC fight will always go against Dems.

So Kavanaugh told Orrin Hatch he wasn't at a very specific party in high school even though nobody has stated which party the sexual assault occurred? But Kavanaugh still knows that Ford's claims were all about that one specific party, which he never went to in the first place, of course.

It could be that he never went to any party with Christine Blasey Ford, given that he claims he had no idea who this person was until she came out with the accusation.

I think Chuck as Majority Leader would have no choice other than to prevent any hard right justice to come to the senate floor. If Trump comes forward with a moderate, then yes. But I doubt the God Emperor will make any concession. Democrats should demand the nomination of Merrick Garland.
