real race is for AG...if Maloney wins he gives up his Trump +5 house seat and the REPS have a strong change to re-take it. Ugh.
Maybe if it was 2010 or 2014. But it's not.
I wouldn't rule it out. While Dems would still be favored, the replacement candidate would be forced to build an entire campaign from scratch only two months before the election. The local Democratic bench is also thin, with the strongest possible recruit, Assemblyman James Skoufis, already running for a crucial State Senate seat. Even if the Democrat won the seat due to the environment, a weak incumbent would be a severe underdog to Steve Neuhaus, the Orange County Executive, in 2020. It would be simpler electorally for James or Teachout to win (and Teachout would be far and away the best AG for cleaning up Albany as well, but that's neither here nor there).
