Being closed is probably the biggest advantage for Progressives in NY. Remember that the house races had one upset and two possible others due to this. In 2016, tit may have been a problem, but by now, the indies would probably just support the moderates.

The problem isnt just closed primaries but NY has some of the worst voting laws in the country:

If the VRA is ever re-written...pre clearance needs to be required for all 50 states instead of just the South

Pre-clearance was required in parts of New York (and other northern states) before it was declared unconstitutional. It was not just a southern thing.

Its true that 3 counties in NY had preclearance but instead of a formula determining which states and counties recieve pre-clearances...there should be an equal blanket set of requirements for all 50 states as to how they conduct their voting laws. Every state should be required to provide early voting, have same day registration, etc...
