Reading the way the Democratic split went down doesn't make a lot of political sense to me. Did they honestly not believe that Lincoln had a chance of winning, or was there already enough secessionist sentiment in the South that they didn't care? Or was it sort of a 'southern pride' thing - that the Northern Democrats needed to be 'taught a lesson' regardless of the consequences?

They probably didnt care about the results of the election,  as by that point they wanted to secede and just needed an excuse for it.

Especially in the deep south, they could see the writing on the wall as far as expansion of Southern interests (slavery) in the west was a losing proposition so they used losing 1860 as an excuse to try and burn down the system, take their toys and leave.

The crazy thing is that they actually stood a strong chance if the election was throne to the House.
