The only way I can see this happening is if they both made third party runs. In that case, Thurmond doesn't make a big impact.

If George Wallace had a realistic chance of being the Democratic nominee for President, Strom Thurmond would have never bolted the party.

If George Wallace had been the 1968 Democratic nominee, it would have had to be a result of a "conversion" on segregation, to where he had come around to a "let's follow the law" posture that was emerging amongst more moderate Southern Democrats such as Gov. Carl Sanders (D-GA) and Gov. Terry Sanford (D-NC).  It would have been a different George Wallace in terms of policy, but the same George Wallace in terms of being very flexible, ideologically.
