It's in the Madison area. Madison is the San Francisco of the midwest.

I haven't been to the area, but it looks like Janesville is a small city that is independant of the Madison metro area, which the Census Bureau defines as just Dane County. Anybody know anything about Janesville?

Madison's pretty liberal but not even half that bad.

Janesville is heavily democratic as well as Beloit at the other end of Rock county.

I was campaigning in Wisconsin in the last few weeks of the election mainly based in La Crosse, St.Croix and Eau Claire. Looking at the county results i do get really frustrated looking at counties that we can win with a little campaigning - this i believe needs to be done early in the campaign. go and met the communities in early may/june.

If you take the county map and look east from taylor, price and clark these are the results of the counties that the republicans won..

St.Croix - is difficult to win difference of 3895
Kerry =18,784 = 44.9%
Bush = 22,679 = 54.2%

Polk - difference of 922
Kerry 47.5% 11,173
Bush 51.5% 12,095

Burnett - difference of 244
Kerry 48.3% 4,499
Bush 50.9% 4,743

Barren - difference of 334
Kerry 48.9% 11,696
Bush 50.3% 12,030

Washburn - difference of 57
Kerry 49.2% 4,705
Bush 49.8% 4,762

Sawyer - difference of 540
Kerry 46.7% 4,411
Bush 52.4% 4,951

Rusk - difference of 165
Kerry 48.2% 3,820
Bush 50.3% 3,985

Chippawa - difference of 699
Kerry 48.3% 14,751
Bush 50.6% 15,450

Clark - difference of 1000
Kerry 46.1% 6,966
Bush 52.7% 7,966

So 9 counties (take away st.croix) that the democrats lost in northwestern wisconsin by a grand total of 3961 votes. little defeats in a county show that they add up. this is true for minnesota and iowa.

the democrats need to get organised here and challenge these counties. if they could overturn these nine counties the state would be alot harder for republicans to win. we cant just rely on dane, rock and milwaukee coz one day we are going to get burnt.

...though likely not (in the near future) in an election you would have won if you carried Wisconsin.

Well too bad for you, Reps still have a good chance to win WI in 2008 and in 2006 (for Governor that is)

Wisconsin is simply a well-run state. I tend to think of Wisconsin as being more liberal than Minnesota actually.

Nclib - given just how Republican those suburbs are, that is quite likely. Should apply in 2004 as well.

Why are the Milwaukee suburbs so Republican?
Good question. I know there used to be lots of Germans in Milwaukee, and they're probably mostly in the suburbs now, but whether that's the only reason I know not.

That's partially true that it's also very white and mid-upper class.

Are Germans especially Republican? We don't have any where I live, so I don't know. Is this why Milwaukee's suburbs are so much more Republican than those of neighboring cities such as Minneapolis, Chicago, and Detroit.

At least in PA, Germans are ultra-Republican. Look at Central Pennsylvania for an example of that.

Interestingly, I more German than Keystone Phil!  Correlation not always true, but you're right.  Central PA is very German and Republican.  The Fox Chase section of Philly is also very German and voted over 60% for Bush.

I stand by my claim that Wisconsin is a well-run state. They were the first to complete their interstate highway system.

A big issue where I'm located in the Highway 36 bridge into Wisconsin. This has been an issue for 50 years! While Minnesota sits around chatting about what can be done about the issue, Wisconsin has already expanded their highways on the other side of the bridge in the hopes that Minnesota will get their act together.

Traffic in Minnesota is terrible. Traffic in Wisconsin is rarely a problem.

Minnesota's reputation for liberalness is overrated. Many believe Minnesota is very liberal since we were the only state to vote Mondale in '84. I'd wager that if Mondale had been from Wisconsin rather than Minnesota, Mondale would have won Wisconsin and lost Minnesota.

You more German than me? Is that what you're saying? Well seeing as how I'm 100% Italian...
