Here is a rather thorough discussion of the law on the subject. I stand by my statement above. It needs to be shown that Trump had actual knowledge that it was a campaign contribution.

One thing I am curious about is whether Trump paid hush money to keep one of his trysts secret when not running for office. If so, he could claim that the money would have been paid irrespective of his running for office, and as the article states, then there is a case the payment was not a campaign contribution.

The fact that they weren't pursuing payment to Daniels until after the Access Hollywood tape came out, even though she had been floating her story before that, heavily implies that the payment was campaign related.

I’m sorry, but 46% of this country still voted for the dingus. Even though he “lost” the popular vote, the fact that it was this close is a pretty damning indictment on the voters

Only 19% of the country as a whole voted for Mr. Trump. 63 million votes out of 325 million citizens. Or, if you want to be even more generous and go by the population given in the last census, 20%. Seriously. So, no, the American people do not deserve this. This is something that Republicans need to take responsibility for, and one of the best way to do that is to actually work through an impeachment trial. They were willing to put this guy forth and tell folks that it was okay to ignore his inappropriate behavior because he would give them supreme court justices.

Not disagreeing with your point but you can't use the 325 million people statistic to measure how many Americans voted for Trump. Those 325 million people include kids and disabled people.

You would have to use the voting eligible population (VEP) of America. Finding the VEP is extremely hard and most people just use the voting age population (VAP). However, not all people in the VAP can vote.

Thank you for finding that.

Obviously, that 56.9% number is pitiful. It should be around 70-75%.

Most people who don't turn out to vote are disengaged from the political process due to their socioeconomic situation (which is why minorities, especially African Americans and Hispanic/Latinos, have disproportionately low turnout rates). Among Whites, it's the lower class ones that abstain. Our political process sucks, our two parties suck, and many don't believe D or R is going to do anything to alleviate their situation.

Lack of voter engagement has been nothing but a problem for Democrats since Dems always benefit from higher turnout. Higher turnout means more minorities and poor people engaged in the political process; Republicans damn sure don't want that (vote ID controversy) and Democrats aren't doing much to engage this population.

IMO the full population is valid if you're going to put it on the full population. But yes, thank you for the numbers! 27% is still not enough to claim a president doesn't deserve impeachment because the country knew what they were in for.
