So, believe it or not, I'm actually asking about the time frame in a hypothetical scenario. Specifically, I'm asking: assuming that Democrats win control of the House in 2018 and the House impeaches Trump (neither of which I take as a given), what would be a reasonable time frame for the conclusion of the impeachment trial?
The most recent comparison was the impeachment of Bill Clinton. The House impeached Clinton on December 19, 1998, the Senate trial began on January 7, and the Senate acquitted Clinton of all charges on February 12. So that's about two months between impeachment and the end of the trial.
However, in 2019, I can't imagine that Democrats would vote to impeach Trump in the first week after taking control of the House; if nothing else I think that the House would want to spend some time holding hearings and conducting investigations. So what's the earliest possible date that you could see the end of an impeachment trial, assuming that one happens?
