Considering the economy was going down the drain, he was handed the party reins from a massively unpopular President,  and ran against a charismatic opponent with a movement behind him, I'd say McCain actually did pretty well.

Hillary's campaign went in for a layup and fell on its face.

Hillary campaign instead try to wow the crowd with an in game 360 Windmill Dunk instead of take the easy layup but that attempt resulted in a miss

McCain. A worse campaign could've resulted in Obama winning a landslide given the circumstances. Heck, I dare say a better running mate than Palin and a weaker campaign from Obama could've tipped the election to McCain despite just about EVERYTHING going against him. Hillary on the other hand had no business losing to Trump, even with the Comey letter, it should've never been that close to where that decided the election.

Hillary Clinton was a severely compromised candidate even before she declared for 2016. But there was ample opportunity to mitigate the issues surrounding her email and Benghazi, and they failed. Completely. There is no excuse for 66% of people in Wisconsin thinking she is untrustworthy. You can't win as a Democrat in any year, against any opponent, with numbers like that.

McCain prevented Obama from winning even bigger than he did. Hillary blew a winnable election by ignoring a crucial region of the country. McCain easily.

McCain's loss is less about his qualities as a candidate and more about the circumstances in the country at the time: high fatigue from Bush, an unpopular war, and the economy crashing.

Hillary ran the better primary, McCain ran the better general.

I mean sure Bernie forced a few things here and there, but Hillary answered them all at beck and call. And she was doing a pretty decent job, actually had me fooled for a while that she'd take it in a walk...then she took that break in August and pretty much tried to let the news cycle do Trump in like a dice roll.

McCain doddered around the whole time, letting Romney and Huck take each other out in the primaries. But in the general, Palin was a decent on paper move that stopped a lot of bleeding, and Joe the Plumber was a reasonable method of attack too.
