More like archaic.  Fun fact, prior to the mid-1820s, "potatoe" was the more common spelling, and it didn't die out entirely until around 1900 (tho clearly dying by 1850).

As low a bar as W is, I seriously question that. First off, Quail really was something of a dim bulb who parlayed his family fortune and Midwestern good looks, + pure dumb luck, no pun intended, into a strong political career. Wow Quail indeed was not a complete blithering idiot, his bigger problem was'an utter and complete lack of Gravitas.
