Yup, it’s a sad day when we have to shut down the thread announcing McCain’s death after just 6 pages because people got into a brawl, bipartisanship is dying and it is harrowing.

My sentiments as well. Why would someone praise polarization?

Forget harrowing, it's sign the end times are coming.

Yeah, it's ridiculous and selfish, this kind of mindset if it gets commonplace is the perfect recipe for even the strongest civilizations in history to crumble to the ground.

Hopefully it won't be that drastic that fast but I would not rule it out either.

Countless dead civilians in the Middle East, opportunistic “maverick” stances when the cameras were rolling or when he was successfully courting access-addicted journalists, unleashing Sarah Palin, the Tea Party, and Donald Trump on US politics...

Will you shut the hell up about "bipartisanship." You sound like the departed - hollow and self righteous. I'm just glad I am not dumb enough to read into McCain's self-written, self serving "legacy." I associate myself with sjoyce's comments completely.

Your definition of "bipartisanship" is for Trump and his supporters to roll over and play dead. Maybe McCain was willing to do that, but I'm not.

Aside from the bits about Trump and Palin, I fully agree.

Thank you for clarifying in the title. I would have otherwise assumed you were talking about Librarian John McCain (G-Nebr.).

I laughed way too hard at this.

To be fair to McCain, he didn't propose the Iraq War.  Blame for that needs to be laid at the feet of George W. Bush, period.

McCain didn't unleash the Tea Party, either.  They were there, and they were going to be there as opposition to Obama.  Had he been elected President there would have been no Tea Party, but there would have been some tension between the McCain White House and "Movement Conservatives".

Palin didn't do too much harm; indeed, she helped elect Obama when you think about it.

The more I think about it, McCain wasn't that significant of a political figure.

Slight.

He became part of the Goldwater machine in Arizona and rode it to close to its end of effectiveness. Should the Democrats win the Senate seat that Jeff Flake vacates, then such will happen with the effective silence of Senator McCain, and it will suggest that the Republican dominance of Arizona politics is over. Because of the law involving the appointment of Senators as successors, his successor will be a Republican... but except where the appointed politician is unusually strong in political abilities or the state is intensely partisan, appointed politicians do badly. I would not be surprised to find that in the 2020 election, Arizona elects a Democrat to replace the successor of Senator John McCain.

The Republican Party is far to the right of what John McCain was in 2008, so he has little influenced his Party in ideology or style.
