Remember this every time you hear any politician, Democrat or Republican, talking about "rebuilding our infrastructure."

Federal transportation dollars are almost always spent wastefully and poorly. They almost always favor new construction over repairing older infrastructure. They almost always favor more affluent drivers over poorer households that own fewer cars and do less driving.

More highways = more driving = more emissions = more deaths.
Yes. Whenever I see some advocating for 'investing in infrastructure', I always assume they mean more highways unless they have a detailed plan that outlines their proposal

Obviously a good infrastructure plan includes the first new rail tunnel under the Hudson in a century, replacing lead pipes, and stop PG&E from burning down your neighborhood (San Bruno gas and Napa Valley electrical).

Yes, well, these plans are usually filled with graft and corruption, too. I think money for local development, spent by local government, would be a better place to start.

Pretty minor (or miner? Wink) when it comes to the big picture.

Learn about negative externalities.

1400 extra annual deaths is a big negative externality, but you're missing the point: There's going be thousands more cases of heart disease and lung cancer as a result of this policy change, all to help an industry that has harmed hundreds of thousands of people. It simply isn't worth the human death toll nor the extra environmental burden.
