"But the stability of president Trump’s job-approval numbers with black and Latino voters — in the face of his myriad “racially charged” remarks and policy proposals — lends credence to the idea that he isn’t actually any more toxic to nonwhite voters than Romney was — and might even be less so. Further, depending on how one reads the data, Trump might actually have become more popular with both black and Latino voters since taking office."

I dunno, the title is kind of misleading. The gist is that Trump is, contrary to expectations, not hurting Republican chances with minorities any more than someone like Romney would have, for whatever reasons. It then goes on to list some Republican pols who are getting good approvals/support from minorities, such as Hogan and Rick Scott (with Latinos). Again, what is unique here? Individual politicians can still build their own brands and make inroads with certain demographics. There is absolutely nothing special about this. Democrats and Republicans do it all the time with demographics that are usually hostile to them. If they couldn't, Democrats wouldn't have Senators like Heitkamp or Manchin, and Republicans wouldn't have Governors like Hogan and Martinez.

If this article is genuinely surprising, then perhaps the notion that minorities everywhere would always reject all Republicans at similar rates is ridiculous, as it should be.

This is more of an indictment of the pre-Trump GOP more than anything else.

My surmise is that a small chunk of minorities beyond those relative few who vote Pub anyway (as to blacks and to some extent Hispanics), are attracted to Trump's populist rhetoric. Nothing more, nothing less.

Not to mention "Hispanic" doesn't automatically equal Mexican.  There are also Cubans, Dominicans, Puerto Ricans, Venezuelans, etc. to take into consideration.

Virginia's, Torie's and Crabcake's posts summarize my opinions of this information. I do also think Trump is making in roads w/ black males, but even if 36% approve of him (or w/e the number is), I seriously doubt that he'll get past 15-19% in 2020 (if even 15%).

For example:

I like Joe Biden. I even approve of him as a person and respect his career. He's got a working class charm about him that makes him more human. And he reminds me of my grandpa, in a very good way, but I'm still not voting for him.

I think the same applies to some demographics and their opinion of Donald Trump or Bernie Sanders type personalities.

Trump may claw his way up to ~15% of the black vote in 2020, but that's probably his ceiling. The dems have a ridiculously strong grip of steel around the black electorate that may never be broken.
I can believe that he's gaining some ground, but he's not doing anything revolutionary.

If Drumpf continues his NFL crusade and his "tough-on-crime" shtick, he'll be lucky to break 8% of the AA vote in 2020.

NO, the Kavanaugh vote, resurrects the old scars of the Clarence Thomas debate, due to the fact Dems could have blocked Thomas and not have Kavanaugh

Agree.
And if Biden runs, and Obama heavily supports and tours the nation with him, the number will stay low (once again). There is no chance it will be anywhere near 15%, as some are claiming; they are dreaming.

Not only that, but what IS Drumpf's idea of minority outreach?  Posing with taco bowls to win over Latinos?  Posing with Panda Express to woo Asian voters?  Wearing feathers on his head and chanting war cries to win the Native American vote?

Yeah,  has Trump ever done any minority outreach? Other than go to black cities to tell them what a crime ridden dump they are.

The truth is that a lot of Latinos prefer and respect a strongman attitude - look at the countries they come from.

Didn't many of them flee those countries because of those "strongmen" though?

No, they fled because of money and jobs.

The thing is, far more AA's agree with Trump on those issues than would vote for him. The GOP is so impressively inept at attracting black voters that "tough-on-crime" is more attractive than the usual GOP slogans.
