I've never been in favor of these initiatives.  This is what you get, however, in a democracy (as opposed to a republic).

I was going to post that Prop. 5 is a better reason to hate Boomers, and then saw that this was about Prop. 5.

"Us first, f*** everyone else." The Baby Boomer motto. It is also the motto of the GOP which explains why they are a match made in hell.

The mass scale at which we will have to house these Boomers in their advanced old age will be truly incredible.  Mega raisin ranches like you’ve never seen.

And robots to care for them.

Baby Boomers aren't the problem; to the extent that they are, it is because (a) America had greater upward mobility and opportunity during their early adulthood and (b) age tends to have a direct association with more significant accumulation of material goods and resources. The problem is wealthy people, which transcends age, race, gender, sexual identity, etc... There are plenty of impoverished and lower class Baby Boomers who suffer and shake their heads in disapproval at such absurd measures just like the rest of us, just as there are super wealthy millennials who'll benefit enormously from similar actions.

I am geeking out at the fact that you shared a tweet from a think tank expert from a conservative think tank.

but agreed on the basis of your complaint.

People are born when they're born and they can't help it. Ascribing blame to an entire group of people based upon when they were born is both simplistic and irrational. Boomers are just trying to get through life, same as you, same as anybody else.

The median age in California is about 36, but that's also including children, and many adults who can not vote. Still California's median voter is no doubt skewed way more young than say 15 years ago.

It appears that this crazed initiative did not make it to the ballot. If it had made the ballot and passed, perhaps there would be a mass exodus of well to do geezers from Florida to California, and tip Florida to the Dems. Did you think about that angle BRTD? Tongue

Honestly, never before this year did I think I'd be saying this, but I think California needs to start scaling back what subjects are valid for initiatives, and/or creating a tiered system where certain subjects require a higher vote share. My issue is really only with recent tax-related initiatives, mostly because I can see them causing major issues in the future. For example, Republicans got an initiative on the ballot that would repeal the gas tax and force the legislature to get voter approval for every new gas tax or vehicle-related fee increase going forward. How is CA supposed to raise funds for infrastructure if every single increase is subject to an anti-tax campaign during the next election? It's not right to tie the legislature's hands like this. If a tax is bad, do a veto referendum. Don't make it impossible to raise taxes, especially since the legislature already needs a 2/3rd vote to raise taxes in the first place. Likewise, this idea is terrible. This is a great way to bankrupt the state all in service of some anti-tax fetish.

But, at the end of the day, this initiative didn't make it cycle anyway, so handwringing not necessary - for now.

CA politicians are some of the most hostile to infrastructure development in the nation so it won't be as much an issue as one might think.

Oh, I guess this wasn't Prop. 5. Anyways, people aren't going to move from Florida to California unless they're rich enough to buy a house in California.

Hot take: people who make under a certain amount should be exempt from property taxes in order to make home ownership more attainable. And yes, that includes boomers.

A great idea, but they would only agree if it benefits only them, as in this bill.

This is great. No one should have to pay property taxes.
