Actually it WAS very serious. It was before he was in Congress. He was a federal judge who was impeached and removed from the bench for bribery, only the sixth judge to be removed in history.

You're missing my keyword, convicted. He was actually acquitted do do a co-conspirator refusing to testify. He may have dodged a trap, but his impeachment was still absolutely justifiable. He's awful.

Hastings is an unbridled HP.  He's in the running for the biggest HP in Congress, not so much for what he's done, but because he doesn't care what anyone thinks of him.  He never has.

Hastings was accused of taking a $150K bribe from a DC lawyer, William Borders, in the early 1980s in exchange for a lenient sentence for a drug dealer.  He was tried and acquitted.  Now I grant you that the fact that he was acquitted cries out at times for recognition, but the circumstances of the case were such that even if Hastings were not guilty of the charges beyond a reasonable doubt, the conduct he was guilty of was well-documented enough for impeachment, and he was impeached by the house (John Conyers, of all people, leading the way.) and convicted in the Senate.  

He ran for Congress in 1992 against then-State Sen. Lois Frankel (D-West Palm Beach).  His campaign pretty much amounted to his statement:  "The b----h is a racist!".  That should have given the world a look a things to come, but for almost 26 years, he's served, pretty much unopposed, in a body that found him unfit to remain as a Federal Judge.  He's had his #MeToo issues (settled by the Federal Government) and he's put his girlfriend on his office payroll.  

He may not be as bad as his reputation, but Hastings, consistently, shows no regard for how his actions and words appear to others.  He's not like, say, Steve King, who's a doofus, but who does care about how he comes across.  He doesn't care.  He made a statement about blacks and Jews having to be concerned about her love for killing moose and skinning them.  He apologized the next day, but he didn't really care.  His comment about Frankel was beyond the pale, but he's never apologized for that or taken it back.  Is he the biggest HP?  I'm not sure, but he's a candidate.
