No doubt he will find a job at an organization in Trump's orbit.

Also, is it so bad to merely attend such conferences? They're peaceful, and he neither presented nor endorsed any white nationalist views that were espoused during his attendance.

How elastic is the phrase "white nationalist" in the context of the story?

I think the phrase accurately describes a number of the conference’s attendees

Whether the Mencken Club itself is a overtly white nationalist organization is unclear to me from this context, so on that I’ll withhold judgment

Mencken Club is founded by Paul Gottfried, Richard Spencer's Jewish mentor who currently works at The American Conservative. Spencer has spoken there before but not in a while. Are they "White Nationalists"? I don't know. There's no governing body of White Nationalism to determine who is and isn't White Nationalist. Neither Gottfried nor Peter Brimelow identify as White Nationalist. Both are certainly anti-immigration, they would probably say the country should remain white and if possible become whiter. Neither Gottfried nor Brimelow has ever endorsed violence to achieve their ends. Neither has ever suggested expelling or denying rights to non-white citizens.

They're just the flip side of Democrats and leftists like Nancy Pelosi who think the country should be less white and must constantly be in a state of becoming less white or else it's "racist".

I would hold off on that until we know why he was fired. (Tough to say definitively since the WH is utterly untrustworhy.) After all, there's nothing praiseworthy about firing him for, for example not mentioning Trump enough in his speech.

How does someone with such views ever gain access to the halls of power, let alone the White House? Huh

Good news for him, I hear there's a job opening with Corey Stewart's campaign. Those 12 Unite the Right demonstrators that he recruited weren't enough to fill his staff quota.
