I vote for Option 4. I would like to see Daylight Saving Time year-round, to save the trouble of springing forward and falling back, and make slight tweaks to the time zone boundaries: Michigan west of I-69/US-27, along with Indiana, should be on Central Time.

As it is, the sun sets in Boston as early as 4:11 PM (around December 8th); even earlier in northeastern New England. On the other hand, if we had year round DST and kept time zone boundaries as they are, the sun in Kalamazoo, MI would rise as late as 9:12 AM on Jan. 3rd-- even later as you travel north on US-31/131.

Also as it is, the Monday after springing forward is a big day for accidents, as everyone is tired. The chief drawback of DST is the late sunrises for schoolkids in late Oct. - early Nov. (which, admittedly, would extend into March if we had year-round DST). School starting times could be adjusted, however.

Keep daylight savings time. I HATE when it’s dark by 5:00 in the evening.

Keep it all the time (or eliminate it all the time, which is effectively the same thing if you change the zone definitions), and let states choose which zones to belong to.

If I lived in Boston (as I did for four years), I would definitely want to switch to Atlantic time under this scenario (thus making 5 time zones in the continental US, which seems like a needless extravagance). Otherwise, summer solstice daylight hours would be 4:07 AM to 7:25 PM, and winter solstice daylight hours 7:11 AM to 4:15 PM.

I actually was in the MIT Library, on the 5th floor, on the morning of Friday, April 26, 1985, back when we waited till the last Sunday in April to "spring forward", so DST was still a couple of days away. I had been working on a paper all night, and when I looked at the clock it was 3:40 AM. In the east, I could see dawn had already broken.

Keep the one that makes it lighter later and get rid of the one that switches back or whatever.

Have one nationwide time, no time zones. Businesses will respond according to daylight and population, just as they do now. Saying “Oh, it’s 6:30 there? It’s 8:30 here on the East Coast” is holding back national unity. No daylight saving time, no time zones, just peace among all people. 🇺🇸

I like having an extra hour of sunlate later in the day so I hate the fall back. Why not keep it so it’s light at 5 pm in the winter when everyone’s awake than at 6am when nobody’s awake that wants to be awake

I like this idea better, just put the country on Los Angeles time so the sun sets earlier in Georgia. It's too hot to go anywhere I don't have to right now and by the time the sun goes down everything's closed.

This actually wouldn't be a bad idea, but with it I'd like to see school start times set later so children aren't waiting at the bus stop in pitch darkenss.

An interesting discussion. In the wake of the 1973 oil embargo, the entire nation was put on DST beginning Jan. 6, 1974 to save energy. (In addition, a national 55 MPH speed limit was set, which had the unintended effect of sharply reducing highway accident deaths). As a result, the sun came up at 9 AM or so in Michigan during the entire month of January. To cope, our elementary school start time was moved from 9:05 AM to 9:30 AM until mid-April. The intent was to stay on DST until Oct. 26, 1975. But the late sunrises proved unpopular for those in MI, IN, and other places in the western part of time zones. So, Congress voted to put us back on Standard Time from Oct. 27, 1974 to Feb. 23, 1975. The vote passed 400-16 or so, with 3 of the 16 No votes from Massachusetts.

In Michigan, a 1968 proposal to put MI on DST failed by less than 500 votes. In 1972 it passed, 54.6% - 45.4%, with strong opposition from the west side of the state: in Berrien County, which is closer to Chicago than to Detroit, 82.7% voted against DST.

I feel that way, too, the Monday after springing forward. Otherwise, I like it.

It's so much worse in the upper Midwest too, when the sun suddenly starts setting at about 4:30PM, and it goes down to almost 3:30PM.

Keep it year round- and adjust boundaries so that nowhere (except far north places where it is impossible) has a sunset earlier than 5:30.  No one should have to get off work, emerge from the day, and have it be dark.

If adjusting the boundaries isn't an option, then I would support DST in the winter and double DST in the summer.  There is no need for daylight at 5-something AM in the summer, but being light until 9 or 10 at night would be incredible.

Daylight Savings Time is here to stay. No one wants the Sun to come out at 4 in the morning in the summer and sunset at 7 in the evening in the Summer.
