If an eleven year old can do it now, doesn't that mean the Russians could have done it in Michigan, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and Florida in 2016?

You're just in denial that your President is blatantly committing treason with a hostile power. If Obama  had done what Trump is doing, he'd already have been impeached, and tried for treason.

You're a poopy nose.

I mean seriously, you're basically a white noise machine that exaggerates and regurgitates the #Resistance opinions that your pussy-hat wearing parents are feeding you with on a silver spoon.

I strongly object to you saying my parents wear a "pussy-hat".  Clearly you have no interaction with other human beings...and society would prefer you keep it that way.

I have to assume the SoS website is only a place to report the results. While you could hack the site to say one thing, it wouldn't overturn the actual results, right?

We need paper ballots that are counted by actual people, not computers. It's a lot more safe. Once confidence in elections is lost, we're on a very dangerous path.

I have a son. He's 10 years old. He has computers. He is so good with these computers, it's unbelievable. The security aspect of cyber is very, very tough. And maybe it's hardly doable. But I will say, we are not doing the job we should be doing. But that's true throughout our whole governmental society. We have so many things that we have to do better, Lester, and certainly cyber is one of them.

This mentality is going to give Trump a second term, because instead of Dems taking an internal look at how to campaign better, it's just more of "we did nothing wrong the election was stolen from us". And Michigan uses paper ballots, good luck hacking those.

wait, what was the point of this story again?  Because if it's supposed to show that an 11yo can change election results then it's funking stupid.  It don't show that.  At all.

This thread is stupid.

This thread is stupid.

The election machines don't (or shouldn't, unless this is a specific model I'm unaware of) connect directly to the internet or an elections website. As best I can tell, this is two separate incidents conducted at the convention: one exploiting the website, and one exploiting machines.

If, however, I'm wrong and the machines do connect to the internet and therefore the elections website, then it's fairly easy to buy these machines online and set them up. I mean, I doubt random elections boards/SoS offices loaned them anything.

All I can think of when I read this was how, upon seeing FL being projected for Gore in 2000, was the sight of Jeb! hopping onto his laptop STAT.

I've now read 4 different articles on this and none of them are clear.  Weird, usually USA Today does such a great job on tech reporting Roll Eyes

My issue, to be clear, is with giving them PHYSICAL access to the machines and the fact that it was just websites they were hacking, not actual voting data.  Of course we should take voting security seriously, but the staged events at the hacking convention aren't evidence that we are failing at it.

This is what I’ve come around to. We need to have a more sober conversation of the actual threats of cyber attacks on voting systems (tampering with Registration) rather than vote totals, which nobody serious has actually suggested was done

The single biggest threat to the voting system by outside forces, hackers or whoever is an attack on the voter registration systems, which - as has been demonstrated and done - can often be accessed through unsecured backdoors via election websites/servers, or third-party hosting services. This is one reason why election websites being insecure matters; it's not just about changing vote totals online temporarily. If root access can be achieved, anything from address and name changes to outright deletion of voters can be performed, potentially creating chaos and a total collapse in the faith of the system (which is probably the second biggest risk, to be honest).

While I sincerely doubt any meddlers would scrub or screw with huge portions of the voter rolls (unless they wanted to be seen), just a modest amount of tinkering can cause huge lines and wait times in swing precincts and/or a loss of votes for whichever party is being targeted. If Russia's goal is to sow chaos in the US with their meddling, then perhaps they'll disenfranchise a few hundred thousand Republicans in crucial swing areas this election: then we'll see if the GOP cares about the issue.

Oh my god, the absolute state of the dems.

When Trump said it could be rigged against him, you all said "no way, suck it up loser." Now when you lose, us republicans have to do the job of bringing you idiots to common freaking sense.

This should scare anyone who cares about the integrity of elections. Our election security systems must be brought up-to-date in order to protect from outside influence.

Although I do agree, this kid does sound like a nerd.
