Bush 41 only won it by 3.6% margin. Was it due to Perot? It's very interesting how a very solid Republican state was so close!

IIRC, Clinton seriously contested the state in 1992. Clinton, probably more so than most politicians, sought to win over those who were reluctant to support him, rather than building on his base and/or getting his base to turn out (a good strategy, given the Dem's electoral fortunes from 1968 through 1988). Perot was probably a factor as well.

For similar reasons, Clinton won Montana (a normally Republican state) and Nevada (which at the time was considered a pretty strong Republican state).

Strong third-party candidacies tend to flatten the electoral map. 1912, 1968, and 1980 saw a lot of “solid” states become unusually close as well.

Spoiler alert: it was Perot.

Clinton got ~1,000 more votes than Dukakis did four years earlier. Bush lost ~27,000 votes and Perot gained ~51,000 votes. Occam's razor ought to dictate the rest...
