I love how people on an internet message board are accusing other sites used to communicate on the Internet of being monopolies.

Are millions of people worldwide commenting using uselectionatlas.org?

Ideally the social media platforms would be nationalized within a democratic socialist system.

Granted, their global presence complicates any discussion of "reform."

Medicine/health care and these are about the only things I would consider socializing (in trade for some freedom concessions on other things like guns).

Does Twitter really need to be nationalized? It's a free service that many people don't even use to discuss politics. It isn't a utility that is needed for quality of life.
This.

Many in this thread are using “monopoly” and “public utility” like they’re synonymous concepts. They’re not.

This is the point I've been trying to make all along.

If a large and increasing segment (probably soon a majority) of the voting public gets their news from a monopoly, it becomes a public utility.

Yeah it's silly reasoning. My dad and his friend made a telephone out of tin cans and string when they were kids. That didnt stop Ma Bell from being a monopolist.

So if a bakery is the only one in town, and therefore a monopoly, should it be required to provide wedding cakes to gay couples?

No, a wedding cake isn't the public square.

This doesn't appear to be gaining traction (which is good), but if it does somehow become law, it would quickly turn into a classic case of "Be careful what you wish for".

I mean yes, it would allow Milo or Alex Jones or whoever to harrass overweight feminists to their hearts' content, but guess what: this sort of thing cuts both ways, and it's quite foolish to think that the Right will forever enjoy a monopoly on trolling:

^^^Rather have the latter than people getting banned, imo.

A great case for regulating the "fifth estate" of social media: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nVVbjlv4j6Y
