I'd be curious to know what evidence you have to support the hypothesis in your question.

Trump will lose the small black support he has.

Well, I have seen 2 polls with him over 20 with blacks, and almost all other polls have him over 10.

Why don't you run a poll and ask the Atlas blacks.

I mean, he did do better with black voters than either of the previous nominees.

Hard not to when considering the Democratic nominee in the previous two presidential elections. Tongue

Anyway, to answer the question: I think the significant decline in black turnout in 2016 did not affect the small black Republican vote so much as it hurt the obviously much larger black Democratic vote.

Furthermore, the growing education and gender gaps we saw among white voters in 2016 were also evident among black voters (particularly the gender gap) - though again, black voters are overwhelmingly Democratic to begin with, and there was obviously a reversion to the mean once Obama wasn't on the ticket.

6% to 8% is not a major difference.

This was Bush's Approval among African Americans in Jan of 2005

It was much higher than his share of the African American Vote

Trump is gaining a bit with blacks, but not enough.

Trump is still seen as a racist, due to his comments about Charlottesville, LeBron, Obama's birth certificate.

Not all black voters care about that. They want jobs, nat'l security, education like everyone else, but he is not liked in the black community.

He'll get 4%-7% of the black vote in 2020.

Candace is in black neighborhoods, not all black people despise Candace, but it is not enough to get more than 10% of the black vote, which will not happen for a Republican, until the 2020s-2030s.

Stop. Romney and McCain were running against a black candidate who drew out a lot of black low propensity voters.

Trump had the worst performance ever by a Republican facing a white Democrat.

Trump will do no better than the 8% he got in 2016. In fact, I believe that even against a white opponent his vote share will be driven down to about Romney's 2012 performance.

Probably, a wee bit, due to the economy.  Nothing to write home about, and nothing guaranteed to last.

There are some blacks who are actual Republicans.  At least SOME black Evangelicals are Republicans, though in nowhere near the numbers white Evangelicals are.

This is incorrect. Barry Goldwater had the worst ever performance by a Republican facing a white Democrat. According to Gallup (https://news.gallup.com/poll/9454/election-polls-vote-groups-19601964.aspx), Lyndon Johnson got 94% of the black vote in 1964, versus only 6% for Goldwater. Hillary Clinton received 88% of the black vote versus Trump's 8%.

I totally forgot about how bad Goldwater did. Thanks for the clarification.

Many of them are getting the police called on them for no reason. I don't want to speak for them, but I think it's fair to infer that they are not particularly pleased with the way things are going. At best, for 2020, he matches the 8% he already got in 2016.
