Good. Making school kids recite a pledge to the government in unison is creepy. There's a reason the pledge is almost word for word the same as the one from the Soviet Union.

Freedom decision. The pledge seems Hitler-like and anti-American imo. I already refuse to say it anyway.

It just hit me that I haven't done the pledge of allegiance at school since the 6th grade, IIRC.

Good move. I stopped saying the pledge years ago, I will never pledge my allegiance to any government.

Yeah, we were a little subversive.

IIRC, our school only had us do the pledge of allegiance in 2nd grade, and I'm pretty sure that was just because some board members were trying to get us to be more overly patriotic after 9/11.

There are places that actually required you to stand? Was always optional where I went, not that many kids opted out.

So?

My high school didn't have the Pledge of Allegiance, or middle school. Just elementary.

Requiring sudents to stand would be illegal and in violation of multiple Supreme Court rulings.

It's kind of the right thing done for the wrong reason.

The world does not change its rituals or its customs automatically because they rub some folks the wrong way.  It just doesn't.  Tolerance is a two (2) way street; while I don't believe kids should be made an example of for not participating in the pledge for reasons of conscience, I don't believe that the school should stop doing something whose purpose is to foster the idea of E Pluribus Unum.  And to replace it with a "Wolf Pack Cheer" is, at a certain level, trading nationalism for tribalism.

No, I am not a big fan.

It's hardly a constructive use of time. I certainly never did it, and I graduated a while ago.

Cool. It's such an antiquated, pointless waste of time. I hope future generations never have to do it.

Fun fact: My free spirit sister refused to stand for it or the anthem during a high school ceremony where she was inducted into The National Honor Society, and no one cared. Was it because she was white? Or was it because people are moving beyond these measures of faux-patriotism?

My high school required us to. I always stood, but never said the pledge.
One time someone giggled during it, and my history teacher went on a 5 minute rant about how we should be ashamed for “not taking the pledge seriously” because “our troopz fight for de flag.”

Good. As a Catholic it's always struck me as a bit of idolatry to pledge allegiance to a piece of cloth, in addition to being kind of fascist-esque forcing children to stand and recite it every single day, and the concept of any loyalty oath feels unconstitutional regardless of the reason, especially for civilians.
