Zero tolerance schools expel students for getting punched (even if they don't fight back), for bringing their medication in, for bringing knives to cut their lunch, for handing something they found to thei authorities, for accidentally bringing weapons, etc.

zero tolerance is ALWAYS stupid, doubly so when we're talking about children.

Nothing should ever be addressed with a broad brush like this. These kinds of things should be addressed on a situational basis. It's really as simple as that.

What I meant is, "What should be done to stop schools from using zero tolerance policies"?

Solution? The government needs to pass a bill protecting the rights of students. Of course this won't happen soon since the government know loves to take away rights from students.

Exactly, no child should be held to THAT high a standard.

That's what I meant though. I was referring to the incidents like with your example: expelling a kid from bringing a knife to school. Schools should consider what kind of knife or any sort of intent before expelling a student for that. Again, in a situational way. I could see why you misconstrued what I meant-I was referring to addressing those kinds of incidents with a broad brush as being an overreaction.

So why are schools resorting to these policies?
