Good news. But how is this gonna work? He said he's suspending his campaign. Does that mean he'll stay on the ballot or will a new candidate be selected?

We'll see. VA-05 should've been safe, but the Republicans went ahead and replaced Garrett with a Bigfoot erotica enthusiast. If they find a good candidate to run in his place, they're fine, but if they mess up, I could still see a flip. Upstate New York is unpredictable.

Agree. But it's still the MOST republican and Trumpish district in NY. Under minimally normal situation republicans must hold it.

More Republicans might get entangled in this, Culberson is the most electorally significant person:

https://twitter.com/bobbybigwheel/status/1027185560157384704?s=21

Doug Lamborn? My congressman is involved in this? I am not surprised at all. I absolutely despise the man, voted against him in the primary, and will vote against him in the general this November. I hope that this might give ammunition to a primary challenger two years from now (preferably someone like Owen Hill), so that he can finally be turfed out of his seat.
Or, you could, you know, just vote for the Democrat.Huh

Good news. But how is this gonna work? He said he's suspending his campaign. Does that mean he'll stay on the ballot or will a new candidate be selected?
The state GOP and Conservative Parties will throw him into random city council races in New Paltz, I guess.

New York is one of the worst states to vote in, I think.

Quite so. That would obviously be part of election reform, too.

Collins should of never dropped out. The GOP is a big tent party: pedophiles, grifters, scammers, felons, Nazis, white supremacists, neo-confederates...there's plenty of room for securities fraudsters

Article on his retirement notes the GOP could replace Collins if he moves out of state. He does own a
second home in Florida:
https://www.politico.com/story/2018/08/11/chris-collins-reelection-bid-insider-trading-773514

And as also noted, they're apparently going to consider putting him on the ballot for Town Clerk or the like, which will also get him off the congressional ballot.

Just curious: Although this is very Trumpy country, is this district's strong R lean in part due to the gerrymandered nature of NY congressional districts.

No. It’s just full of Republicans. The 24th and 25th are drawn very neatly, and the 26th, though ugly, is drawn to lump all of the working class suburbs of Buffalo in with Buffalo proper and Niagara Falls. Erie County has enough people for more than one district, so its suburbs have to be cut up somewhere.

If you look at Senate and Gubernatorial results, this part of Western New York is the most Republican part of the state.
