Is this related to the matter that was before the House Ethics Committee?  If so, it shows both how foolish the Republicans on the committee were to drop the matter and how toothless the committee is.

From wiki, this is the same thing as the matter that was before the House Ethics Committee.  The Republicans were indeed foolish on this.  Had they addressed the matter when it was before the committee they could have forced all those who took part in this to resign or retire long before the election.

In May 2017, White House ethics investigators "began probing Collins for his role in recruiting investors to buy stock in Innate Immunotherapeutics after several complaints were filed".[99] Members of Congress are explicitly barred from trading stocks using insider information.[99] In October 2017, the Office of Congressional Ethics (OCE) said they had "substantial reason" to believe that Collins had improperly used his public office to benefit Innate, and had forwarded nonpublic information to other investors.[100] The OCE said Collins sent nonpublic information to investors about drug trials and that he visited the National Institutes of Health to discuss a drug's clinical trial, saying that this violated House ethics rules.[100] The House Ethics Committee did not appoint a subcommittee to continue investigating Collins' case.[101]

This does raise even bigger issues though:  did the higher ups in the Republican Party force the Ethics Committee to not investigate this case?  Who was involved in this attempted cover up?  In short, what did Speaker Ryan know and when did he know it?

Nate McMurray seems like a solid one term placeholder candidate if Collins gets hit hard by this at the polls.

Why is this district so heavily Republican anyway?  It's mostly suburban Rochester and Buffalo which doesn't sound like a district that would be heavily Republican.

Why not? IIRC correctly Waukesha county (and other nearby) is both suburban, Republican and very conservative. IMHO - these are not contradictory statements...

Rochester’s suburbs, which are quite Democratic now, are all in the 25th district, except for the town of Victor. The 27th is all farmland, small towns and wealthy Buffalo suburbs, with none of the blue collar factory towns that voted for Obama.

Democratic politicians do the same thing as well.....

Madigan, Chicago pols.

I am waiting for the arrest of Mike Madigan to occur one day.

Politicians corrupt, what isn't new.

This seat is the Rochester and Buffalo suburbs.

Still Likely R.

And remember, Collins can’t just drop out and be replaced by some random state legislator. Because of New York’s byzantine ballot rules, he has to get convicted before he’s removed from the ballot.

I have a feeling Collins would win the election from prison.

I live in this district.. None of it is suburbs. Those are all in 25 and 26. .The 27th is all of Wwestern NY exclusing the PA border counties),and two 25 mile radius bubbles around Rochester(25th) and Buffalo (26th).

More Republicans might get entangled in this, Culberson is the most electorally significant person:

Doug Lamborn? My congressman is involved in this? I am not surprised at all. I absolutely despise the man, voted against him in the primary, and will vote against him in the general this November. I hope that this might give ammunition to a primary challenger two years from now (preferably someone like Owen Hill), so that he can finally be turfed out of his seat.

It's Lean R if Republicans can't replace Collins, Safe R if they can.

As for who can replace him on the Republican ballot... How about New York State Senator Rob Ortt?

Now we have a tiny possibility that New York will have a 27 D - 0 R delegation in 2018.

I remember after 2006 or 2008, the Republicans only had 1 or 2 seats in NY. It may have just been down to Peter King and some random from upstate.

If Paul Ryan knew anything about this, then it's a good thing he's not running for re-election.

I really don’t see why what he did was illegal. You know your stock is about to lose $768,000 in value and you have to sit there and take it because you know it’s coming in advance?

If you know that because you have information that is not available to the general public (and therefore to most of the stockholders), then yes you do have an obligation to take the loss.  Or go to jail.  Take your pick.

You really don't see the problem with insider trading?
