What'd be the lessons from Trump presidency ?
  • Don't vote against your interests.
  • Nationalism leads sometimes into disasters. Realism is better than elitism and populism.
  • Don't listen too much populists.

- Don't vote for f**ing idiots
- Triggering the libtards is fun but a third Bush presidency also would have triggered the libtards
- Don't tweet
- Don't start trade wars
- Don't lock up children in cages to look cool or fire up the base

What a good thing the Dems aren't listening to this at all with the Bernie 2020 talk Smiley

Another idea:

Don't choose leaders who create toxic nostalgia for a past who existed or not. Choose leaders who're able to accept present and future challenges.

Don't blindly follow someone in everything they say and do. Question them.

This, but I am saddened that Trump may have ruined any chance of a non-politician being elected in the future.

I could write a very long and detailed list. The most important ones are:

- Elections and civil engagement matter. Get out and vote, from the courthouse to the White House.

- The truth and science matter.

- Inform yourself from various sources and take a critical look at promises made.

Overall: Democracy and freedom are not for free and should not be taken for granted. These values must be defended. EVERY. SINGLE. DAY.

1. Never elect a demagogue.
2. Never elect someone with no involvement with the government. A political record matters.
3. Demand to know the meaning behind political slogans.
4. If you are to vote for someone extolling the past, then make sure that you know what aspects of the past are to be recovered.
5. Reject flagrant narcissists.
6. Do not let identity decide for whom you are to vote.

This, but I am saddened that Trump may have ruined any chance of a non-politician being elected in the future.

Dwight Eisenhower might be a possible model of an exception. But Ike was a politician in a way, having had to lobby for funds for modernizing the US Army when everything else better served some political purpose of the time.  Surprisingly I compare Ike to of all people Obama for having a similar temperament, caution, probity, respect for legal precedent and diplomatic protocol, chilly rationality, and cleanness of government despite backgrounds very different. Then again, I think that Barack Obama would have also been a fine military man.

If we are to elect a tycoon, we will insist upon knowing how that tycoon's experience in business makes him a better-than-average administrator. That could have been a strong cause to vote for Lee Iacocca -- but even he knew that the Presidency was not for him.

A non-politician will need to prove himself in elected office, a cabinet position, or senior military service first.  But there one gets a record for political dealings, votes and perhaps vetoes, and the content of speeches. Vapid slogans are not enough.

Republicans are deplorable cultists, and their party is a criminal syndicate. They are not fit to govern, not interested in living in a free country, and are a dangerous threat to the well-being of their fellow human beings.

The Modern Presidency has become way to powerful
Indeed.  It's time to expand the size of congress and restore its power while diminishing the power of the executive.

This, obviously, but that requires a Congress that *wants* to be co-equal

Don't elect terrible and corrupt candidates for a Presidential election, especially when the other option ends up being the moron you really don't want.

Where to even begin? Can I get back to this thread after I finish writing my dissertation on this? We're barely even half through, by the way. I'm sure we'll be learning even more lessons over these next two years.

It will be difficult, for the GOP to come back into power after 2018. The way the Senate map of 2020 and 2022 look like and Dems may have a clear majority after 2022 and reapportionmemt. Thats why the Dems need to block this Kavanaugh nomination, with the help of Collins until after the Nov midterms, hopefully.
