The Democratic-Republicans withdraw our support of Mr. Muhlenberg and endorse the Whig candidate in Pennsylvania.

James Madison's Campaign Schedule

Knowing he had little time to stay away from the Assembly, Madison went on a short campaign tour of regions that he knew either had strong support for him and his party or were relatively competitive.

First, he left Philadelphia for the swing yet favorable region of Maryland, where he first set foot on the site of the new capital to make a speech to the locals on the progress of the Madison Government and his coalition partners, including the decrease in the national debt. He also made a ringing endorsement of the Republican candidate for Governor, calling him the "right choice for Maryland". He then embarked for other small towns in the region, distributing leaflets in favor of the Republican party. Next, the First Secretary traveled by stagecoach to Annapolis by way of Baltimore, where he made a speech in front of the General Assembly in favor of his candidate, calling the Hamiltonian candidate "too Northern and out of touch with Maryland's states' rights values", and the Patriot candidate "representing the interests of only Georgia". After visiting numerous small towns throughout the southern half of the state for a week, where he drank with local citizens and bolstered the local Republican party, he then set off for the Republican stronghold of Virginia.

Arriving in Alexandria, Madison made yet another speech for the Republican cause, and praised Virginians for helping in the swift resolution of the Westsylvanian Crisis. He then, after stopping in multiple villages along the way to bolster his party's support, headed for the General Assembly in Richmond, where he made an impassioned speech before the Delegates, calling the incumbent Republican governor "a symbol of freedom and integrity" and the candidate "the only one who appears before you which is a true Virginian, and who represents our values through and through".

After further bolstering his party's support by taking a tour of the state for two weeks, he then set off for New Jersey and Connecticut, where he was not afraid to disregard the pundits' claims that the North was a long shot for the Republicans, and instead make impassioned speeches before both states' legislatures, touting the Republican candidates' credentials and calling the candidates "the best choice for liberty, freedom, and prosperity". In each state, he also improved upon the local Republican parties, where he chatted and drank with local citizens and bolstered the local offices. He visited quite a few small towns in the area, before finally returning to the National Assembly.

Final Campaign Efforts for FS Madison

Noticing the closeness of the race in Maryland, Mr. Madison took a few weeks away from Philadelphia in the final weeks of the campaign to specifically tour the state and to build up a strong base of Republican support. He made a final speech to the General Assembly, touting the credentials of the Republican party in government and in Maryland, including recognition in the Westsylvianian resolution - something the Patriots did not do - and denouncing claims of toxicity in the Republican faction as "utter lies, and a baseless attack from a party that has nothing much more to say". He focused on the fact that the Patriots, whose base of support exists mainly in the deep South, have little reason to care for Maryland, unlike the Republicans, whose base of support extends into Maryland. Furthermore, he also noted that the Hamiltonians, while a formidable faction, also have shown that they do not prioritize the key values of Marylanders over their more northern neighbors, including states' rights. Mr. Madison, using his credentials as the leader of the Republicans, hoped to unify the Republican vote in favor of the Republican candidate, which would hopefully in a four way race be enough to carry the Republican over the top. Furthermore, he reached out to independents and undecideds personally, hoping to sway their votes also.
